A Wave Blue World has carved out a massive reputation in the indie comics scene. They specialize in powerful, award-winning crowdfunding anthologies, previously taking home hardware like the Ringo Award and GLAAD Media Award for hit books Young Men in Love and Becoming Who We Are. Now, the publisher is launching a brand-new graphic novel project aimed squarely at the current political landscape.

The campaign for Civil Disobedience: Stories of Resistance is officially live, running from June 9 to July 4.

What Is the Civil Disobedience Anthology?

This massive 150+ page graphic novel brings together 16 distinct stories focused on fighting back against oppression. The creative teams approach the theme from multiple angles, balancing historical accounts of past protest movements with contemporary political struggles. The book even stretches into science fiction, offering allegories of resistance set in the near and distant future.

The goal of the anthology is to inspire hope and determination. The publishers want readers to realize they have the agency to create change. To bridge the gap between fiction and reality, the book features a pair of “guide” characters named Mayne and Henry the Antifascist Honey Badger. These guides walk readers through the book, providing practical advice on how to apply the lessons of each story to the real world. The comic functions as both an entertaining narrative and a resource guide for community organizing, staying safe during protests, and standing up to authoritarian regimes.

The All-Star Creative Team

A Wave Blue World assembled a powerhouse lineup of indie comics veterans and rising stars to manage the project. Civil Disobedience is edited by the trio of Vita Ayala, Jarred Luján, and Tyler Chin-Tanner. Chris Shehan handles the main cover art, while veteran designer Tim Daniel crafted the book’s logo.

The full roster of comic creators contributing stories to the project includes:

DB Andry, Vita Ayala, Henry Barajas, Angel Baron, Corinna Bechko, Chase Bluestone, Mark Bouchard, Jordan Clark, Terence F. & Jayne Ellen Clark, Tim Daniel, Noah Dao, Myrka Elizalde, Lucas Gattoni, Matt Harding, Jonathan Hedrick, Miguel Hernandez, Maya Houston, Jamie Jones, Liana Kangas, John Konrad, Danny Lore, Jarred Luján, Ryan Oakley, Leonie O’Moore, Micah Myers, Greg Pak, Chas! Pangburn, David Precht, Mark Russell, Seth Smith, Valentine M. Smith, Morgan Tellie, Leah Williams, Stephanie Williams & Hana Yaacob.

Crowdfunding Backer Rewards and Exclusives

The crowdfunding campaign offers multiple tiers for backers looking to pick up the book. Rewards include standard digital and print editions of the graphic novel, alongside physical merchandise like buttons, pins, and signed bookplates.

As a specific incentive for the campaign, the publisher is offering a crowdfunding exclusive PDF titled Inside Look into the Making of Civil Disobedience. This digital bonus features creator interviews, character design sheets, and behind-the-scenes look at the early process art. The digital deluxe tier and all physical backing tiers automatically include this exclusive making-of PDF.
