Marvel is crashing the comic shop shelves this September with a massive nostalgia trip that flips the script on its own history. The publisher is celebrating the Marvel Mangaverse 25th anniversary by dropping five weekly one-shot comics that completely reinvent the cult-classic imprint. Instead of a standard retrospection, Marvel is treating this revival as if the imprint never stopped printing, delivering a dystopian, magic-infused landscape that feels fresh and incredibly high-stakes.
The original Marvel Mangaverse, which launched at the turn of the millennium, merged Western superhero iconography with Japanese storytelling tropes. Now, twenty-five years after its debut, the line returns with a heavy hitter roster of talent, including writers Joe and Jack Kelly, Cody Ziglar, Ashley Allen, Alyssa Wong, and artists Kenny Ruiz, Kei Zama, Mirka Andolfo, and Michael Yg.
What is the Plot of the Marvel Mangaverse 25th Anniversary Event?
The upcoming event shifts away from the high-tech aesthetic of the original 2000s line. Technology is dead, magic rules the world, and a prophesied apocalypse brought on by the return of the Phoenix is actively burning down the universe.
The narrative backbone of the event is a two-part tragedy focused on three main characters: Miles Morales (Spider-Man), Laura Kinney (Weapon X-Tremis), and Illyana Rasputin (Legion). Once close friends, the trio fractures over how to halt the end of the world. As they turn to forbidden sorcery, their ideological rift transforms them into bitter enemies, forcing readers to wonder if their desperate actions will save their reality or simply accelerate its destruction.
The Five-Week Lineup of One-Shots
Marvel is releasing these specials chronologically every Wednesday in September. The lineup blends classic shonen pacing, dark supernatural threats, and stunning character redesigns.

The event kicks off with a script by the father-son duo Joe Kelly and Jack Kelly, featuring hyper-dynamic art by Kenny Ruiz. This issue establishes the new Status Quo where magic reigns supreme. The creative team’s deep roots in the fandom shine through the scripting. Ruiz, who previously worked on Team Phoenix with the support of Osamu Tezuka’s estate, noted the intense creative energy behind the book:
“My job is to live up to what Joe and Jack Kelly and Yuji Kaku Sensei have created, like a poor shonen hero clearly overwhelmed by the challenge. But if you live and breathe manga like I do, you know what to do in those situations: grit your teeth, sacrifice everything, and give it your all. I can’t tell you anything yet, but I can’t stop drawing. This new era of the Mangaverse is demanding everything we have to give—and damn it, we’re not backing down.”

Authentic Manga Influence: Yuji Kaku’s Character Designs
Editor Lauren Amaro prioritized hiring creators with genuine roots in the international manga community. The biggest coup for the anniversary event is securing acclaimed mangaka Yuji Kaku (Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku) to draw the main connecting covers and handle the baseline character designs. Kaku worked closely with the writers, taking early text pitches and translating them into a unified, modern aesthetic that bridges Eastern and Western visual traditions.
