For six issues, the Infernal Hulk has rampaged across the globe, reshaping the planet in his sick image. Earth’s heroes have finally had enough, gathering their forces and directly confronting the monster. Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson knows the Hulk is Marvel’s scariest hero and proves just how terrifying he can be by the time you put this issue down.

How Adam Gorham’s Art Enhances The Story

Guest artist Adam Gorham has the unenviable task of following up Nic Klein’s iconic work, but proves why he’s the right person for the job. He leans into Klein’s style, rendering the Hulk as a pure monster with bulging muscles, thick veins, and massive hands that rip apart Iron Man armor as easily as you or I could crush a grape. Gorham affixes the former hero’s face with a permanent scowl, showing how little regard he has for the destruction following in his wake.

This issue reinforces how hopeless the situation has gotten. Reed Richards, Tony Stark, and Bucky Barnes are no longer talking about simply beating the Hulk; they’re openly discussing the best ways to kill him. They send in Tony, complete with brand-new Hulkbuster armor, to face the Green Giant. Gorham nails the design of the suit, portraying it as large enough to rival the Hulk while lining the arms and shoulders with vicious spikes and adding two huge wings that erupt from the back. Colorist Matthew Wilson wraps the wings in blinding whites and dynamic yellows, giving Tony an almost angelic motif.

Tony Stark Takes On The Infernal Hulk

Their fight is brutal and intense. Streaks of demonic green blood and bright orange explosions accompany each punch as the two combatants clash across the battlefield. Letterer Travis Lanham delivers some of the best sound effects in comics. The giant THOOM that accompanies Stark’s arrival shudders with jagged pen marks while every blow is punctuated with sickening SHLUCKs and KRNNNKs that ramp up the violence. This is a no holds barred fight between two of Marvel’s greatest heroes, and every attack reflects that gravitas.

Seeing Reed calmly discuss killing the Hulk is almost as chilling as the battle itself. This is Marvel Comics we’re talking about here. These heroes rarely kill. But that’s how big of a threat Hulk has become. PKJ wisely uses that danger to say something about these characters. When push comes to shove, they’re willing to cross a line we’re not used to seeing. The time for compromise is over, and it’s do or die now. Literally.

Gologolthia Brings Hell To Earth

The living city of Gologolthia that frames Tony and the Hulk’s clash looks like it was ripped straight from a nightmare. Ominous spires shoot up into the sky, while the ground comes alive with rivers made of fire. Winged demons battle empty Iron Man suits in the background, while Wilson blankets every panel with red and orange tints that make it seem like hell itself. It’s a fascinating setting that keeps you wanting to see more in each passing issue.

Verdict?

Can anything stop the Infernal Hulk? Issue six succeeds by offering no straightforward answers. Our heroes are prepared to kill, but that doesn’t mean they have the resources to pull it off. New armor can’t save Tony, while his allies can only watch helplessly from the sidelines. This is the Hulk that’s been lurking in their nightmares, and it doesn’t look like they’re waking up any time soon.
