Marvel just dropped a massive bomb about the future of its flagship team. This November, the powerhouse creative team of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto is taking over the main title with Avengers #1. Far from the standard relaunch, the new ongoing series rises directly out of the ashes of Avengers: Armageddon, a five-issue limited series by Zdarsky, Delio Diaz, and Frank Alpizar that promises to completely shatter the status quo and leave Earth’s Mightiest Heroes operating in a radically altered reality.
The premise flips the classic dynamic on its head. Earth itself is now the victim, and the world no longer trusts the people wearing the capes. The initial roster leans heavily into gritty, street-level mainstays and powerhouse icons, featuring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and a mystery hero who hasn’t been revealed yet.
The Creative Team Behind the Madness
Zdarsky and Checchetto are comic royalty at this point. Their legendary run on Daredevil redefined Matt Murdock for a modern era, and Checchetto recently wrapped up a visually stunning stint on Ultimate Spider-Man. Reuniting them for Earth’s Mightiest Survivors ensures the book will have a grounded, intense emotional core balanced by blockbuster visuals.

On taking the reins of Marvel’s flagship super hero team, Zdarsky said, “It’s obviously a massive honor getting to write the world’s greatest super hero team! And after what happens in Avengers: Armageddon, this lineup is angry as hell and ready to avenge.”
Zdarsky says he’s aiming for a book that dictates the pace of the entire publisher line. “Avengers is a book that should lead the Marvel Universe, where big things happen and surprises keep hitting,” he explained. “That’s what Marco and I are doing with every issue and I can’t wait for people to fall in love with these gorgeous pages.”
Checchetto seems equally stoked to bring his detailed, cinematic art style back to a collaboration with Zdarsky. “Here we go again. Chip and I, assembled. We had a blast on Daredevil (2019), and since wrapping up Ultimate Spider-Man (2024), I’m thrilled there was an opportunity to do something new with him. It’s in moments like these where Chip’s utter madness comes through, and the result is right before your eyes.”
The artist is particularly excited about the specific group of personalities anchoring this roster. “I love this team,” he continued. “It’s going to be great to see these characters interact with one another and see how they untangle themselves from the situations we’re going to throw them into.”
Zdarsky echoed the praise for his artistic partner. “It’s amazing to be working with Marco again,” Zdarsky added. “Time and time again he proves he’s the best at giving us the coolest possible versions of these characters and what he’s doing in this book is next level.”
What to Expect From the New Era
Marvel Editor Wil Moss is positioning this run as the definitive center of gravity for the publisher’s upcoming slate. Teasing the new run, Editor Wil Moss said, “Chip and Marco have come up with such an exciting direction for this new volume of Avengers, striking just the right balance of quality AND spectacle, of pitch-perfect characterization AND shocking takes, of a sense of legacy AND a true trailblazing spirit. Chip and Marco’s Avengers is going to be the heart of the Marvel Universe going forward—trust me, you won’t want to miss a beat. Just wait till you learn the full roster…”
AVENGERS (2026) #1 variant cover by Chip Zdarsky
Marvel is also utilizing a unique sales strategy for the physical launch. Avengers #1 will be the next Marvel Comics launch available in True Believers Blind Bags, each containing an exclusive variant cover not available elsewhere—including one-of-a-kind, hand drawn sketch covers by surprise contributors!
The road to this new era starts immediately. While Avengers #1 officially hits comic shops on November 4, the prelude story, Avengers: Armageddon #1, lands on shelves next week on June 10.
