‘Magik’ #8 Review: Delivers a Strong Foundation for the Finale

Ashley Allen continues the Magik saga, joined by guest artist Matt Horak and colorist Arthur Hesli. While regular artist German Peralta is absent, Horak’s clean and visually interesting art, along with Hesli’s painterly colors, does a great job of selling the mysticism of the series. The first page is particularly striking, thanks to the dynamic composition and colors.

The story moves at an aggressive pace, taking Magik from the Pacific Northwest to Limbo and now to Nevada. She’s reunited with her close friend and fellow New Mutant, Dani Moonstar, who is now a member of the mysterious Society of the Eternal Dawn. This has created a conflict between the two, once as close as sisters. Now, they must set aside their differences to stop the demon Liminal, who has possessed the body of their friend Cal.

Marvel Comics

This issue finds Magik and Dani in Las Vegas, storming a compound where the Scarlet Eye is hiding a magical artifact. The Society of the Eternal Dawn promises this artifact will help Cal, but things are not as they seem. The breakneck pacing allows for an energetic and fast-moving plot, but the conflict between Magik and Moonstar is sometimes lost in the shuffle. Their interactions feel clunky and stilted at times, and what could have been a powerful demonstration of conflict between them falls flat.

Thankfully, Allen’s writing shines in other areas. The central twist is predictable, but in a good way. Allen has done a great job of leading the reader to this conclusion. The heart-to-heart talk between Magik and Dani halfway through the issue is a genuine and heartfelt moment, reaffirming their strong bond.

Marvel Comics

Ultimately, Magik #8 is a strong issue that ties up some character conflicts while pushing the story forward to a logical conclusion. Allen has done a good job of tying up loose ends and setting the stage for a strong finale in the next two issues.
