Immortal Legend Batman HC is hitting the shelves this week as our favorite pick for Week 20. DC’s Elseworlds line usually works best when things get weird. This book definitely qualifies. Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom take the Dark Knight out of the rainy streets and drop him onto a dusty mining colony in deep space. If you love the high-energy vibe of Radiant Black or the armored action of Tokusatsu, you’ll want to grab this one. It’s a wild sci-fi reimagining that feels fresh and totally unexpected.
Why You Should Grab Immortal Legend Batman
The story kicks off with a massive hook: Bruce Wayne and Batman are separate people, and they aren’t on the same side. In this universe, Bruce is a sheriff trying to keep his colony safe from energy creatures called Shadows. Then a futuristic, armored Batman shows up and starts accusing the Sheriff of being a monster. It’s a great setup. You’re immediately thrown into a mystery that makes you question who the hero actually is. The Immortal Legends lore can get a little heavy at times with talk about the “Way of the Bat,” but the action keeps things moving. The collection even includes the Dan Mora backup stories, which help flesh out the massive scale of this new universe.
The Vibe and Art of Immortal Legend Batman
The art is the real reason you’re clearing shelf space for this. Erica D’Urso and Igor Monti created a world that’s somehow both filthy and neon. This Batman suit trades the usual tactical armor for a design pulled straight out of a 90s anime or a Kamen Rider episode. You’ll feel every hit. There’s a specific Super Sentai energy that peaks during the massive finishing moves. That kind of visual scale is exactly why you want this in a hardcover. It’s Batman pushed way out of his element!
Honorary Mentions for Week 20
While Immortal Legend Batman HC is the main event, these other trades and hardcovers are definitely worth your time:
Star Wars: Out of the Darkness TP: Alex Segura and Phil Noto take us back to the early New Republic days. It’s a grounded look at Luke Skywalker dealing with the Nagai pirates that feels like a classic expanded universe adventure.
Star Trek: Red Shirts TP: Christopher Cantwell and Megan Levens turn a classic trope into a high-stakes character drama. It’s a serious look at the expendable crew members that avoids falling into easy parody.
JLA: A League of One – The Deluxe Edition HC: This is the definitive way to read Christopher Moeller’s painted masterpiece. It’s a gorgeous story about Wonder Woman taking on the entire Justice League to save them from a dark prophecy.
