Marvel’s newest animated adventure, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, swings onto Disney+ with an intriguing first episode titled Amazing Fantasy. This isn’t your typical Spider-Man origin story—while still familiar in many ways, it weaves in some refreshing twists that set up an exciting new timeline for Peter Parker. The first episode introduces us to a younger, slightly different Peter, an alternate take on the Osborn family, and a few unexpected guest appearances that shake up the classic Spidey formula.

“Amazing Fantasy” is an excellent season premiere that wastes no time setting the stage for this alternate Spider-Man story. We meet Peter Parker as he begins high school, a moment of excitement quickly overshadowed by the sudden arrival of a mysterious portal, a symbiote-like creature, and none other than Doctor Strange himself. As the chaos unfolds, a spider sneaks out from the portal, and well… we all know what happens next.

Fast-forward a few months, and Peter is now balancing high school, his growing superhero identity, and a blossoming friendship with Lonnie Lincoln—a character who, in most Spider-Man stories, turns into the villainous Tombstone. However, here, Lonnie is a hardworking, intelligent student with a strong sense of responsibility, making for a dynamic and unexpected friendship with Peter. Meanwhile, Peter’s longtime crush, Pearl Pangan, has already been scooped up by Lonnie, much to Peter’s dismay. (Turns out the Parker luck isn’t limited to just crime-fighting mishaps.) But the biggest twist comes at the very end—when Peter returns home, expecting a quiet night, only to find Norman Osborn sitting in his living room instead of Tony Stark. Now that’s a mic-drop moment!

Right off the bat, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man hits the sweet spot between nostalgia and innovation. The animation style, heavily inspired by Steve Ditko’s classic artwork, gives the series a visually distinct identity. It’s fluid, vibrant, and has just enough grit to make New York City feel alive.

As for Peter Parker himself? He’s as charming, awkward, and lovable as ever. Hudson Thames delivers a fantastic voice performance, capturing the youthful energy of a teenage Peter who’s still figuring things out. The supporting cast also shines—Nico Minoru (yes, from Runaways fame) makes a strong impression as Peter’s new best friend, and Lonnie Lincoln’s reimagining adds a refreshing new layer to the story.

The episode’s pacing is sharp, keeping things exciting without feeling rushed. The early action sequence featuring Doctor Strange creates a compelling mystery. At the same time, Peter’s daily struggles ground the story in that classic “balancing act” that makes Spider-Man relatable. The humor is well-placed, with a standout moment being Peter’s very public (and very embarrassing) attempt to sneak into class after a botched superhero rescue.

This new Spider-Man iteration delivers a refreshing take on the familiar origin, excelling in its character development, particularly with Peter, Nico, and Lonnie. It boasts an engaging animation style blends classic comic aesthetics with a modern flair. The humor is well-executed, and the concluding scene with Norman Osborn is a standout moment. However, the animation occasionally suffers from stiffness, and the brief tease of a Venom-like creature leaves viewers wanting more. Additionally, while promising, Pearl Pangan’s character feels underdeveloped, leaving room for potential growth in future episodes.
