Marvel Comics Announces ‘Midnight’ Horror Universe

Marvel Comics is diving into the dark with the announcement of the Midnight Universe. This brand-new publishing line arrives this fall, signaling a shift toward terrifying, supernatural storytelling. It’s a bold expansion that moves beyond the standard heroics of the Avengers, potentially acting as a modern successor to the Midnight Sons or a rival to the prestige horror once seen in DC’s Vertigo. (Updated)

What is the Marvel Midnight line?

Think of this as the spiritual successor to the Ultimate Universe or the New Universe, but with a heavy dose of body horror and supernatural suspense. Marvel’s Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski notes that the goal was to let creators “delve into the darkest corners of their imaginations and birth some of the creepiest, most terrifying takes on the Marvel Universe you’ve ever seen.”

The rollout starts with three core titles. Each one leans into a different flavor of horror, from urban vampire wars to Lovecraftian science gone wrong. They’re also introducing a “Cloaked Cover” gimmick—the main art stays hidden under a shroud until you actually buy the book and flip the page.

Midnight X-Men: Mutant Vampires and Turf Wars

Midnight X-Men #1 Cloaked and Revealed Covers

MIDNIGHT X-MEN #1

Written by JONATHAN HICKMAN
Art by MATTEO DELLA FONTE
Cover by DIKE RUAN
On Sale 8/5

Jonathan Hickman is returning to the X-Men, but he isn’t interested in Krakoan politics this time. Teamed with artist Matteo Della Fonte, Hickman is dropping us into a New York City where mutants and vampires are the dominant predators. It’s less about “protecting a world that hates and fears them” and more about “not getting eaten in the crossfire.”

Hickman is clearly energized by the freedom of this sandbox. He shared:

“I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years. The conceit of MIDNIGHT X-MEN aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I like to tell. It has a rich, open-ended mythology that equally mixes old and new ideas into something that feels both familiar and original.”

Midnight Fantastic Four: Cosmic Dread Unleashed

MIDNIGHT FANTASTIC FOUR #1

Written by BENJAMIN PERCY
Art by KEV WALKER
On Sale September 2026

Coming in September, Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker are taking the First Family and stripping away the “family” warmth. This isn’t a team of explorers; it’s a group of people warped by dimensions that should have stayed closed. Percy describes the tone as “cosmic, Lovecraftian dread.”

Percy’s pitch for how he got the job is almost as creepy as the premise:

“When Hickman called me, it was from a landline in the basement of an abandoned house with the wires cut. Blood poured from the receiver into my ear. I said yes. When I imagined this other version of Marvel—a terrifying, poisoned universe—my mind immediately went to the Fantastic Four. This is a title I have always loved, but would never be allowed to write otherwise.”

Midnight Spider-Man: The Body Horror of Peter Parker

MIDNIGHT SPIDER-MAN #1

Written by PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON
Art by SCIE TRONC
On Sale October 2026

Finally, October brings us Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Scie Tronc (making his Marvel debut) for a Peter Parker story that will make your skin crawl. Forget the friendly neighborhood vibe. This Peter is a “hideous spider hybrid” created by Oscorp’s quest for immortality. It sounds like The Fly meets The Amazing Spider-Man.

Johnson isn’t pulling any punches about the intensity of the line:

“The work we’re doing right now on the Midnight line feels like history being made. We’re all bringing creator-owned sensibilities to our projects, we’re redefining boundaries, we’re reinventing these timeless characters in a way that’s never been done. Midnight is nothing like the main line, nothing like the Ultimate line. You will see things in these books that shock you.”
