The legacy of the Alchemax and Facility experiments is far from over. In the upcoming Marvel series Generation X-23 #1, writer Jody Houser and artist Jacopo Camagni take Laura Kinney and her sister Gabby back into the shadows of their shared history. Releasing on February 18, the series promises a deep dive into the trauma that forged these two heroes while introducing a mysterious new group of X-subjects.

Laura Kinney and Gabby Return to Their Traumatic Roots
The story follows the sisters as they track a dangerous conspiracy that leads them straight back to the dark science of their origins. While they begin by dismantling anti-mutant threats and battle-ready robots, the heart of the narrative lies in Laura’s evolution from a weapon to a leader. According to Houser, this journey forces Laura to step into a familiar mantle, but with a personal twist.
“Laura has done a lot of work coming to terms with how she was raised versus the hero she’s chosen to be, and she’s adjusted to being an older sister figure to Gabby. GENERATION X-23 puts her in a position to potentially take on a role that we’ve seen Logan in many times over the years — mentor and teacher. But the fact that it is tied closely to her past complicates things.”
Exploring the Dynamic Between the Wolverine Sisters
Central to the series is the contrast between the two leads. While they share a traumatic background, their outlooks on the world remain polar opposites. Gabby continues to bring a sense of wonder to their heroics, while Laura’s history makes her cautious, often leading to a protective friction between the two.
“I think big sister/little sister sums it up pretty well. Gabby definitely finds the fun in what they do, and has a rosier view of being a hero. Laura is much more of a realist, but this can lead her to be more overprotective than Gabby feels she needs to be.”
Jacopo Camagni Brings Expressive New Designs to Generation X-23
Visually, the series relies on the expressive style of Jacopo Camagni. Houser noted that the collaboration was highly synergistic, with character designs evolving through their creative back-and-forth. The writer expressed particular excitement for how Camagni brings Gabby to life on the page.
“Jacopo is fantastic at drawing really expressive characters — I especially love his Gabby! We also had some great back and forth when it came to designing the new characters, and one of them was completely reworked based on his initial concept sketch. I think fans will really dig his work on this book.”
The Ethics of Science: Who are the New X-Subjects?
As for the new faces appearing in the title, Houser remains tight-lipped about specific spoilers but hints at a classic ethical dilemma regarding the creation of these new subjects. The threat—or potential alliance—seems rooted in scientific overreach.
“I think the new characters can best be summed up by the classic movie quote, ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ Definitely excited for readers to meet the new faces, but not much I can say here without spoilers!”
