When Earth’s Mightiest Heroes hit a massive milestone, you know they have to pull out all the stops. And for the landmark 800th issue of Avengers (that’s Avengers #34 in the current volume), Marvel is bringing back one of the team’s most influential modern-day creators: Brian Michael Bendis!
This January, Bendis will deliver his first Marvel Comics work since 2018. He’s reuniting with superstar artist Mark Bagley for a special 14-page backup story inside the giant issue, joining the current creative team of Jed MacKay and Farid Karami.
The celebratory tale is set on the anniversary of the Avengers’ founding, and it reunites the legendary “Big Three” (Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America) for a critical mission to stop a new Hydra weapon. Before long, you can expect a whole crew of teammates, both past and present, to show up for an epic showdown.
Why is This Such a Big Deal?
For nearly a decade, Bendis redefined the Avengers, spearheading massive, company-shaking events like House of M, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign. His work completely revitalized the franchise, and his impact is still felt throughout the Marvel Universe today.
Bendis himself is clearly thrilled, sharing: “To reunite with the Avengers on the occasion of an anniversary is doubly wonderful… I get to reunite with my dear longtime Ultimate Spidey AND Avengers collaborator Mark Bagley. Just reuniting would be magical enough, but him coming out of retirement to do this story with me was an incredible gesture.”
But wait, there’s more! Bendis teased, “This is the first of some truly special Marvel projects that I will be part of in the near future. Stay tuned…”
