In a surprising announcement today, Marvel Comics has revealed that the upcoming series initially solicited as ‘New Thunderbolts*’ will now launch as NEW AVENGERS. This twist, characteristic of the Thunderbolts’ legacy of deception, introduces an unexpected and formidable team lineup.

The new series, penned by Sam Humphries with art by Ton Lima, will see some of the Marvel Universe’s most dangerous and solitary figures unite. The roster includes The Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Carnage, The Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine. This powerhouse team will face off against corrupted clones of the Illuminati.

Marvel states this radical new lineup will usher in a revolutionary era for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, in the vein of Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch’s influential NEW AVENGERS (2004) run. Writer Sam Humphries confirmed the change, calling it the “first of many” surprises.

The publisher also noted that this comic book title change parallels a major twist in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, which is now in theaters.

NEW AVENGERS #1 is scheduled for release on June 11th, with multiple variant covers available, including a homage to the 2004 New Avengers #1 cover.
