Jason Todd, Batman’s complicated (and resurrected) son, is stepping out of the Caped Crusader’s shadow and leaving Gotham behind for a brand-new, adults-only comic book series set firmly within mainstream DC continuity. That’s right, your favorite gun-toting, bike-riding anti-hero is getting the spotlight he deserves!

Our gun-toting, motorcycle-riding anti-hero is ditching Gotham City for the vibrant, and seemingly corrupt, city of New Angelique (New Orleans). This September, fans will finally get the spotlight they’ve been craving on this popular character. The new series comes from the creative team of Gretchen Felker-Martin (known for her horror novels like Manhunt) on writing duties, Jeff Spokes (Jenny Sparks) handling the art, and Becca Carey on letters.

According to writer Gretchen Felker-Martin, the series promises “Sweat, blood, and powder burns. Broken bones and mind control.” Jason will be navigating a city “rotted from the inside out” as he hunts down an “enigmatic telepath.” Jeff Spokes adds that Felker-Martin’s writing is a “well-crafted blend of superheroes and pulp noir, all with a New Orleans flavored backdrop.” Expect a “gritty, bloody, sexy, and stripped down” experience.

New Angelique might seem like a place where Jason could finally settle down, but it’s not that simple. There’s a serial killer targeting cops, and to complicate matters, another familiar face from Gotham has arrived: Helena Bertinelli, also known as the Huntress! Her presence is a key mystery Jason is determined to solve.

Editor Arianna Turturro enthusiastically calls Red Hood “the in-continuity story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for.” She promises “high-stakes action, a gripping mystery, and raw, unapologetic storytelling.” Turturro emphasizes that the series will highlight Jason’s core characteristics: “his difficulties with personal connections, his badass training, his brooding hotness, and his violent approach to heroism.” And to be crystal clear: “Which means he’ll be killing people—a lot.”

Red Hood #1 is slated for release on September 10, with pre-orders kicking off on June 20. This highly anticipated series will feature an array of variant covers from top artists like Jim Lee, Brian Bolland, Jae Lee, Kyuyong Eom, and Nick Robles, with Jeff Spokes providing the primary cover. Starting with the second issue, Taurin Clarke will take over as the ongoing cover artist.
