Marvel Comics has officially announced a new era for the Golden Avenger, revealing at the New York Comic Con 2025 ‘Next Big Thing Panel’ that a new IRON MAN #1 series will launch in January 2026 from superstar writer Joshua Williamson and “Legacy Stormbreaker” artist Carmen Carnero.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of multiple recent re-launches and new #1s for the Iron Man title, a frequent publishing strategy for the character in the modern era. Just a few examples of this include:
- Invincible Iron Man (2022), by Gerry Duggan, which recently concluded its run, tied into major Marvel events, including the “Fall of X” and “One World Under Doom” crossover.
- Iron Man (2024) by Spencer Ackerman and Julius Ohta, which debuted in late 2024 and concluded its run with only 10 issues in mid-2025.
- Iron Man (2020) by Christopher Cantwell, which ran for 25 issues.
- Tony Stark: Iron Man (2018) by Dan Slott.
These relaunches highlight Marvel’s ongoing practice of giving Iron Man frequent fresh starts with new creative teams.
The new IRON MAN #1 by Williamson and Carnero is highly anticipated, with Marvel describing the duo as “two of the industry’s most celebrated creators” joining forces for an era “engineered to be a hit.” The storyline centers on Tony Stark’s desire to shape his legacy, which is twisted when his old nemesis, the femme fatale Madame Masque, teams up with Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) to “weaponize the next Tony Stark.” This sets the stage for a conflict where a new arch-enemy will be born, with familiar faces making shocking returns.
Writer Joshua Williamson, known for his prolific work at other publishers, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Part of our tagline for this book is that Tony Stark is the most dangerous weapon in the Marvel Universe.” The series will explore the foundational question of what weapon Tony Stark creates when death comes calling again, but with the added twist that a new villain (Madame Masque) may get there first.
The debut issue is scheduled for January 28, 2026. It will feature a wraparound cover by Ryan Stegman and a promotional variant by Adam Kubert, setting a grand stage for what Marvel promises will be “classic super hero storytelling in the MIGHTY MARVEL MANNER.”
