The iconic 90s crossover event, ‘Age of Apocalypse,’ is making a grand return this September with a new six-part series, ‘X-Men of Apocalypse’ (2025). And to make things even more exciting, superstar artist Joe Madureira, who was a pivotal part of the original event, is back to lend his incredible talent.

Madureira will be drawing variant covers for every issue of ‘X-Men of Apocalypse,’ bringing his distinct and influential art style to the characters he helped define decades ago. This marks his first return to the franchise in years, and fans can expect glorious depictions of the X-Men from this dystopian reality.

The new series, written by Jeph Loeb (another veteran of the original ‘Age of Apocalypse’) and featuring art by Simone Di Meo, picks up directly after the explosive finale of the 1995 crossover. In this timeline, where Charles Xavier’s death led to Apocalypse’s reign, a war-torn group of X-Men led by Magneto fought to free their world. Though the main Marvel timeline was restored, their reality lived on!

Now, the X-Men of Apocalypse are on a desperate mission to save their universe, which will bring them crashing into the main Marvel Universe. This collision will lead to conflicts with their classic counterparts and forever impact the destinies of both teams.

‘X-Men of Apocalypse’ will kick off with ‘X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1’ in September, continue with ‘X-Men of Apocalypse #1-4’ starting in November, and conclude with ‘X-Men of Apocalypse Omega #1.’

Madureira himself expressed his excitement, stating he’s “beyond excited to be dipping back into this corner of the X-Men universe” and hopes to bring “something new to these characters on my covers.” Jeph Loeb also shared his enthusiasm, highlighting Madureira’s revolutionary style and the thrill of having him contribute his distinctive covers to the series.
