This June, the cosmic landscape of the Marvel Universe is set for a radical transformation with the launch of IMPERIAL, a four-part event series spearheaded by renowned writer Jonathan Hickman. Known for his architect-like approach to storytelling on titles such as Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the current Ultimate Universe, Hickman is collaborating with celebrated artists Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello to redefine Marvel’s galactic canon.
First hinted at late last year, IMPERIAL addresses a universe in turmoil following the sudden removal of key cosmic leaders. The series promises a saga filled with political intrigue, unfolding mysteries, and inevitable conflict as factions vie for control, ultimately shaping a new galactic power structure.
According to Marvel, IMPERIAL will have significant consequences for major players, including the Hulk, Black Panther, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, and various cosmic rulers. The event aims to lay the groundwork for future interconnected space-based narratives.
Hickman noted his excitement for the project, explaining the intent is similar to the recent Ultimate relaunch – revitalizing a corner of the universe – but positioning IMPERIAL itself as a core event driving the change. He praised the work of Vicentini and Coello, both members of Marvel’s ‘Stormbreakers’ initiative, who are contributing not only interior art but also crucial new designs for characters and settings.
Both artists expressed enthusiasm for the project and the challenge of working with Hickman’s detailed scripts, promising their best work for this ambitious venture.

IMPERIAL #1, featuring a cover by Marco Checchetto, goes on sale June 4th. Fans are encouraged to preorder and watch for further announcements regarding the series and potential tie-ins.
