The next era of the Armored Avenger is almost here. Announced back at NYCC, the new Iron Man series from Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero is set to launch in January, and it looks like they are flipping the script on Tony Stark’s legacy.

The newly released preview offers a dark twist on the classic origin story. We see a man trapped in a cave, building a suit from a “box of scraps” to make an escape. However, this isn’t the hero we know—and that’s exactly the point. It turns out Madame Masque and Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) aren’t interested in just reverse-engineering the tech anymore. They are hunting for a specific kind of genius.

Iron Man #1

As the preview establishes: “A.I.M. doesn’t need another armor. We need another Tony Stark.”

While the real Tony is busy tinkering away, unaware that A.I.M. is trying to manufacture his replacement, he has other eyes on him. Melinda May is returning to the fold, and she isn’t exactly looking for an autograph.

According to Williamson, May isn’t impressed by Tony’s accolades or intellect. She sees right through the billionaire genius persona to the danger underneath, and she intends to keep him in check. Interestingly enough, Annie Wu’s “Foreshadow Variant” cover suggests “The Cavalry” might even be suiting up in her own armor very soon.
