A new graphic novel, “BEFORE WE SAIL,” is set to launch on David Lloyd’s online comics magazine, Aces Weekly, beginning July 7th. This seven-part series explores the consequences of life in a society that has lost confidence in its future.

“BEFORE WE SAIL” is the first foray into comics writing for Carlos Yacolca. Yacolca shared his belief that “art is a superior medium of communication, and comics the greatest art of all”. He views this project as a “three-song EP” to share his initial ideas, with plans to build upon them as he develops as a writer. He also mentioned that for his first shot, he wanted to start with a classic story genre to see how he could shape it to express his ideas.

Michelle Lino, who is making her comeback to comics after a six-year hiatus, is the artist behind the novel. Hailing from Perú, Lino is known as a pioneering cartoonist and illustrator. Her flexible drawing style can be as detailed as it is wild and grotesque, allowing her to really play with the comic strip format. Lino said this project stemmed from a deep love for comics, and she’s fascinated by how visual art elements can significantly strengthen a story’s meaning and impact beyond the power of words alone. For her, returning to comics with “BEFORE WE SAIL” is a way to show how her style has evolved and to reconnect with an art form she’s crazy about.

The “BEFORE WE SAIL” crew also includes Diego Revelo, a.k.a. “El Hollen,” from Lima, Perú, handling the lettering. Revelo has previously lettered for Heavy Metal Magazine and worked on Peruvian comics, such as “Kchina Comics”. His art has also been featured in Ascend Comics and Webtoon Originals.

Alberto Rayo, a comic writer and editor from Lima, Perú, took on the editing duties. Rayo’s work has been published by Heavy Metal Magazine, Ascend Comics, and Webtoon Originals, and he even co-edited the “Cautionary Fables and Fairytales” anthology.

David Escobedo, a graphic designer based in Lima, Perú, handled the design work. Escobedo’s focus on semiotics led him to delve into comics, where he worked as an illustrator, concept artist, and colorist, and wrote reviews for Spanish-language media.

The novel will roll out in Aces Weekly Volume 75 over seven weeks, starting July 7th. Aces Weekly, published by David Lloyd, the famous illustrator and co-creator of “V for Vendetta.”

Aces Weekly is an online-only comic art magazine. Every Monday night, subscribers can check out serials and shorts made specifically for tablets, laptops, desktops, and smart TVs, featuring top talent from all over the world in huge, seven-week volumes.

Besides “BEFORE WE SAIL,” Aces Weekly Volume 75 is packed with five other awesome stories in a massive anthology of up to 150 pages:

  • “Lazarus” from Paco Vilchez Burea
  • “Drells Marauders” from Gary Whitlock
  • “Sicarios” from Roberto Corroto and Ertito Montana
