If you’re looking for a quick, fun comic that puts the “super” back in super-sidekick, look no further than Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #44! Writers Mark Waid and Mark Russell, with artist Lucas Meyer, have delivered a hilarious one-shot that proves sometimes the World’s Finest duo needs a break, and their younger counterparts need a road trip.
The issue’s main event is a reluctant team-up between Robin and Supergirl. Batman sends Supergirl to back up Robin, who is undercover, trying to find out what a LexCorp subsidiary, Ardora Industries, is illegally developing in Sedona.
If you remember their one (and only) date, you already know the trouble that’s brewing. I mean, even Superman thinks their personalities “fit together like teeth and aluminum foil,” making this mission a guaranteed hilarious disaster. The bickering starts almost immediately, with Supergirl catching up to a blissfully unaware Robin driving his car and listening to an aggressively upbeat podcast called “Second Banana: Embracing Assistant Culture on the Daily”. That entire scene was hilarious from start to finish.
Their situation escalates when the factory turns out to be making Kryptonite (of course). Before you know it, Supergirl and Robin are literally tied up together with Kryptonite-adjacent chains. Their endless arguing even inspires their guard, Dave, to pause his “Relationship Talk” podcast to offer unsolicited, deep-cut relationship advice.
But the real fun is watching these two save themselves. Robin uses Supergirl’s super-breath, and Robin uses an old party trick escape. After an explosive finish, the young heroes fly off and make out, only to bump into an arriving Batman and Superman, who are immediately convinced they are on a date.
All of this chaotic fun is perfectly rendered by the artistic team. Lucas Meyer’s art is vibrant, capturing the frantic energy of the sidekicks’ dynamic. Adriano Beredo’s colors pop, making the issue a visual treat, and Steve Wands’ lettering ensures the rapid-fire dialogue and all the hilarious sound effects land perfectly.
Despite all the chaos, the issue captures the charmingly antagonistic chemistry between the two sidekicks, who, even while denying they are dating, make a surprisingly effective (and very funny) team. For any fan who loves the lighter side of the DC Universe, the hilarious clashes and clever capers make Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #44 the perfect palate cleanser.
