Marvel is preparing to dismantle its flagship team once again. Avengers: Armageddon is the upcoming five-issue event series written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz. Arriving this June, the story serves as the explosive finale to story threads started in One World Under Doom and Zdarsky’s own Captain America run. Marvel is framing this as a “watershed moment” that will fundamentally shift the status quo of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The conflict centers on a massive power grab in the wake of Victor von Doom’s recent activities. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, better known as the Red Hulk, invades and claims Latveria for himself. This act of aggression triggers a global firestorm. When the heroes intervene, the situation escalates into a “super-powered cataclysm” involving the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, and the broader Marvel roster.

Marvel encourages readers to “witness the origin of the end!” The editorial team has been clear about the scale of the fallout. They’ve stated that “there will be a pre-Armageddon Marvel Universe and a post-Armageddon Marvel Universe.” The shift is expected to be as significant as the fallout from Avengers: Disassembled, leading directly into a brand-new era for the team later in 2026.
Who is the Creative Team Behind the Event?
Chip Zdarsky leads the project, bringing the same acclaimed energy he utilized during his Eisner-nominated tenure on Daredevil. He’s joined by Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz. This artist duo recently handled the visuals for Doomed 2099 and collaborated with Zdarsky on Captain America. Their style focuses on the heavy-hitting, visceral action required for a global war involving the Red Hulk.

When Does Avengers: Armageddon Release?
The main event kicks off with Avengers: Armageddon #1 on June 3rd. It features a primary cover by Dike Ruan and high-profile variant covers by Kaare Andrews and Jerome Opeña. However, the road to the end starts a month earlier.
On May 2nd, participating comic shops will distribute Armageddon/X-Men #1 CGD 2026 for Comics Giveaway Day™. This prelude issue features a massive creative collaboration including Jed MacKay, Ryan North, Federico Vicentini, and Francesco Mobili. It’s designed to provide a “terrifying glimpse at the cost” of the war with Ross before the main series even begins.
