The Amazing Spider-Man #7 swings into action with a compelling blend of classic Spidey charm and fresh, intriguing developments, thanks to the dynamic duo of Joe Kelly and John Romita Jr. This issue is a big step forward in the ongoing saga, feeling both familiar and excitingly new – a clear sign that Kelly and Romita Jr. truly get what makes Peter Parker tick.

Joe Kelly’s script is a masterclass in balancing Peter’s inner monologue with the action. Right off the bat, we’re thrown into a thrilling, early morning brawl with Hellgate through the streets of New York. What’s particularly notable here’s how Kelly sidesteps the usual “edgelord introduction” trope for the new villain. Instead of just a generic fight, Spider-Man actually talks to the demon knight, leading to a surprisingly fresh, albeit still action-packed issue. Hellgate is immediately established here as a serious threat to Manhattan, making this more than just a standard enemy.

Marvel Comics

John Romita Jr.’s art is, as always, a cornerstone of the book. His dynamic paneling and distinctive character designs bring Kelly’s script to life with a kinetic energy that’s just perfect for Spider-Man. The action sequences are fluid and impactful, really showing off the web-slinger’s speed and agility. Romita Jr. also nails the emotional beats, from Peter’s exasperation to the raw power of the villains. While some fans might have their favorite artists, Romita Jr.’s contributions here are undeniably strong and effective.

This issue might, in fact, be one of Romita Jr.’s best, looking clean and popping off the page with his unique style. There’s a standout scene where Hellgate “love taps” Spider-Man, and Romita Jr.’s use of afterimage effects is both neat and a little silly, yet perfectly conveys the impact and gravity of the blow; you can practically feel Peter’s pain!

Marvel Comics

The Amazing Spider-Man #7 is a strong showing for Kelly and Romita Jr., as they successfully introduce new threats and mysteries that promise to keep readers hooked. Despite the plot being primarily action-oriented and revealing little about Hellgate’s motives, the sheer awesomeness of the dynamic battle and the intrigue it creates make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. It’s a solid entry that sets an exciting tone for the series’ future.
