Absolute Wonder Woman #10 continues to shine as a flagship title in DC’s Absolute line. Kelly Thompson’s writing and Hayden Sherman’s art combine for a potent blend of thrilling action, profound character development, and breathtaking visuals. This issue deepens Diana’s struggle as she navigates the elusive maze of Area 41, constantly searching for what evades her. Will she escape, and if so, will she remain the Diana we know and love?

The story picks up with Diana, accompanied by the hulking Minotaur, Ferdinand, and the mysterious young siren, Petra, as they navigate the treacherous labyrinth. From the get-go, Thompson establishes a dynamic pace with an impactful fight scene where Diana and Ferdinand unleash a flurry of slams, slices, tosses, and even a “yoink” on the unsettling Fish-men. Letterer Becca Carey clearly has some fun here, adding to the kinetic energy. However, the intensity of the battle takes its toll as Ferdinand is gravely injured, forcing Diana and Petra to make a desperate escape.

Thompson masterfully integrates Diana’s past with her present struggles through seamless flashbacks. We see a younger Diana grappling with her warrior training and innate compassion. A particularly touching scene shows young Diana refusing to fight the panther god without reason, only to immediately spring into action when her friend, Nico the turtle, is in danger. This glimpse into her formative years provides valuable insight into her character, showcasing how her protective instincts have always been at her core, even in the face of brutal adversaries. This narrative choice not only enriches Diana’s character development but also feels incredibly faithful to her essence, even for readers less familiar with her younger tales.

DC Comics

Hayden Sherman’s art in this issue is simply trippy in the best possible way, particularly when depicting the maze under the influence of the hallucinogen. Their unique style, coupled with a strong sense of composition and impressive use of perspective, truly brings the fantastical elements and monstrous designs to life. The aqua color of the Fish-men, for instance, makes them stand out vibrantly against the black backdrop of the maze. From the imposing figure of the Minotaur to the unsettling nature of the Fish-men and the fierce, intimidating panther god with its blood-covered face, Sherman’s creature designs are a consistent highlight. Even the cover art by Sherman is exceptional, resembling an insect infected by a parasite. It’s a striking and remarkable image that perfectly sets the tone for the issue.

This iteration of Wonder Woman, raised in a harsher, more magical world, continues to resonate deeply. Thompson manages to make Diana both more godlike in power and yet somehow more compassionate, showcasing her unwavering dedication to protecting innocents. Her core compassion shines through, even in the face of danger, making her a truly inspiring hero.

This issue also delivers big revelations. We always assumed Diana was spared for a reason, and now we learn she was spared as a “weapon” to be used against the gods, potentially the male gods specifically. Hecate’s discussion of how Diana’s youth and kindness will lead them to underestimate her adds fascinating layers to her role. It’s all just a satisfying series of dominoes finally falling into place, significantly enriching the narrative. The exploration of Diana’s origins, particularly her upbringing in Hell under the care of Circe, continues to add fascinating layers to her character, presenting a Diana who is familiar yet refreshingly original.

Absolute Wonder Woman #10 blends thrilling action, profound character development, and breathtaking art, making it a standout in DC’s Absolute line. The issue particularly shines in its exploration of Diana’s origins and her dual nature as a formidable warrior and compassionate protector, all brought to life by Sherman’s “trippy” and masterful artwork.
