It’s the news Marvel fans have been waiting years for. Starting this January, in the pages of ‘Captain America’ #6, the iconic covert agency S.H.I.E.L.D. is officially coming back!
Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and star writer Chip Zdarsky (who is absolutely on fire with this ‘Captain America‘ run) dropped this huge announcement last week at the Lucca Comics & Games festival.
The new storyline, kicking off in issue #6, marks the beginning of the “Road to Armageddon,” directly building up to next summer’s big comic event, ‘ARMAGEDDON,’ also helmed by Zdarsky.
Drawn by series regular Valerio Schiti and guest artists Delio Diaz & Frank Alpizar, the new arc finds Captain America dealing with the chaos following the ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM storyline. Now, he’s rushing to Latveria to protect civilians and investigate a rumored weapons stash.
Wait, S.H.I.E.L.D. is Back?!
Yes! The organization, which has been dissolved since the SECRET EMPIRE event in 2017, is returning as an ALL-NEW S.H.I.E.L.D.—and they’re not exactly playing on the same team as Cap.
Apparently, bringing back S.H.I.E.L.D. has been on the agenda for nearly a decade. Cebulski explained that with this being the 60th anniversary of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s debut, and with the direction of Zdarsky and Schiti’s Captain America story, the time is finally right!
“Ever since S.H.I.E.L.D. disbanded almost 10 years ago, the idea of bringing it back has come up at every creative retreat we’ve had,” Cebulski shared.
Meet the New Team: Unpredictable and Unconventional
This isn’t your parents’ S.H.I.E.L.D. This version, led by Nick Fury Jr., is described as smaller, leaner, and operating more underground. Their immediate mission? Retrieve Doctor Doom’s weapons in Latveria.
The new roster is a truly eclectic mix, featuring:
- Joe Ramos: An idealistic soldier from Brooklyn.
- Charles Castlemore: A retired Marine with strong, defined views.
- Trevor Tambling: A soldier of fortune whose motives are totally murky.
- Red Widow: A former Russian agent abandoned by her home country.
With Latveria already on the brink of civil war after Doom’s fall and a brutal incursion by Thunderbolt Ross, the arrival of this unpredictable new S.H.I.E.L.D. turns the whole mission into a powder keg. Everyone wants a piece of Latveria, and Nick Fury Jr. has to keep his unconventional crew in line—even if it means a head-on collision with Captain America.
Zdarsky couldn’t hide his excitement: “Bringing them back with a new mandate and scope has been incredibly fun… The world’s a dangerous place. Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. weren’t there to stop Doom, but maybe they can stop what’s coming next…”
‘Captain America’ #6 hits shelves on January 21st. Make sure to let your local comic shop know you want to pre-order this one, because it sounds like a game-changer.
