‘Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma’ #1: He’s Literally Dying to Save Us

Ram V and Anand RK resurrect Mitch Shelley! The Resurrection Man had finally lived a full life, only to be reawakened with a new mission – save the universe. He must journey through time to fight Gashadokuro, a sadistic WWII commander twisted by a dark version of Shelley’s powers, a monster possibly born from Shelley’s past. As cosmic lines blur and heroism invites punishment, he’s literally dying for you. Can even eternal resurrection overcome a foe forged from his own essence? Let’s find out!

Ram V is absolutely killing it over at DC; his incredibly imaginative work, from Swamp Thing and Detective Comics to other legendary-scale stories, has been fantastic. And now, with Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #1, he’s again upping the ante. Teaming up with Anand RK and his ethereal art, they’ve created something truly next-level and unforgettable, featuring a story that seeks to turn life and death inside out.

This comic starts with a heavy moment – someone’s long life is ending, the family’s crying, the whole sad goodbye scene. But things aren’t what they seem because Mitch Shelley is back! You might not know Resurrection Man (that’s Shelley’s alias), but he’s been kicking around DC’s dark and magic side since ’97. This time, his return comes with a new purpose, though we don’t find out what it is in this first issue. Instead, the story dives deep into some real human tragedies. It sidesteps the usual DC Comics mythology to show us a world where evil isn’t just a human flaw but something much bigger, almost divine in its awfulness. Writer Ram V throws you into this complex world but makes it easy to follow. Even if Mitch Shelley is new to you, seeing his life unfold – family moments, prison time, even his death – tells you exactly what kind of hero you’re dealing with. V’s story pulls you along effortlessly, making the stakes clear and showing what the series has in store. Trust me, a lot goes down in this book, and it wraps up by introducing a villain who looks ready to cause maximum chaos with his new abilities.

Ram V and Anand RK bring an incredible energy to Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma. This comic explores the shades of grey in DC Universe heroism, showing how much creativity and ingenuity can elevate the art form. Ram V’s writing is consistently impressive. He expertly weaves in elements like Hitler and the mythical “Spear of Destiny” alongside references like Eclipso’s “Heart of Darkness,” demonstrating a knack for satisfying DC fans. But it’s more than just fan service; V’s writing style is smooth and almost poetic, making even complex concepts easy to follow. He masterfully grounds grand ideas by connecting them to harsh realities like war, internment camps, cannibalism, and human savagery, resulting in a powerful reading experience.

Anand RK’s artwork is outstanding – he’s clearly bringing his best work here. The art has a cosmic, elevated quality that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. The Samsara double-page spread is a perfect example: it’s incredibly detailed and creative, depicting layers of coalescing gears, yet it uses negative space effectively to avoid feeling cluttered. This highlights RK’s talent. His style is also surprisingly clean; characters might have a soft appearance, but they convey depth, and his line work is detailed throughout the issue.

The artistic collaboration is a major highlight of this comic: Anand RK’s fantastic illustrations are given incredible life and cohesion by Mike Spicer’s colors, resulting in dramatically elevated visuals. This comic has a lovely, muted beauty – it uses color well without being garish. You’ll see golds, reds, purples, and a striking fire orange woven throughout, and Spicer handles it masterfully. But honestly, the empty black spaces are what make the art stand out so effectively, letting it breathe and showing how deliberate the color choices are. Then there’s the lettering by Aditya Bidikar, which puts the finishing touches on everything. Shesha’s black thought bubble? It looks menacing and cool simultaneously, and you instantly get a sense of his power just from how his words appear. Generally, the lettering flows well; Bidikar uses the panels, bubbles, and space smartly to keep you reading smoothly. It just works. The whole team did excellent work here.
