You know how some comics just hit differently? Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #4 is one of those. Ram V, along with Anand RK and Butch Guice, has crafted something truly special here, taking Mitch Shelley’s unique ability to cheat death and turning it into a profound exploration of what it truly means to live.

This DC Black Label title has been consistently blowing me away, and issue #4 is no exception. At its core, it’s a brilliant exploration of what it means to live and appreciate life. Mitch is on a desperate race against time to stop the terrifying Gashadokuro, and with the fractal Microverse in his hands and an unexpected new ally, he’s forced to confront whether the biggest evil lies out there in the cosmos or, more unsettlingly, within himself.

Ram V’s writing is, as always, incredibly layered. He masterfully weaves together complex themes like love, loss, imperialism, and the very essence of karma. The non-linear narrative perfectly mirrors Mitch’s fragmented existence, jumping between his countless deaths and rebirths. This isn’t just a superhero tale; it’s a philosophical journey exploring purpose and how every choice, every “lifetime,” shapes our ultimate destiny. There are some truly powerful emotional moments, especially when we learn more about Mitch’s past and the devastating impact of a reality that’s been altered.

DC Comics

The art by Anand RK, with colors by Mike Spicer and lettering by Aditya Bidikar, is absolutely breathtaking, as always. RK’s distinct style is a perfect match for the book’s metaphysical and almost psychedelic vibes. From the opening pages showing the Kurukshetra War in beautiful golden hues clashing with brutal combat to the grotesque yet strangely beautiful visualizations of Gashadokuro tearing through time, the art creates a totally immersive experience. The use of color is particularly striking, with stark contrasts that visually reinforce the thematic balances in the story. And a shout-out to Butch Guice, whose one-page synopses for each issue are a fantastic nod to the character’s history and a great way for new readers to jump in.

One of the biggest surprises was Samsara’s heel-turn to evil. He seemed like a genuine ally, and now it’s unclear who’s in the right —him or Mitch, which adds a lot of depth and creativity to the series. I also love the cameos in this series! We see Green Lanterns, the Atom has been a recurring presence, and now the Flash even makes an appearance. It makes Resurrection Man feel like a vital part of the wider DC Universe, even if he’s not always in the spotlight. And then there’s Human Target, further highlighting that the DC Universe is much bigger than just the usual heroes we see.

DC Comics

Ram V continues to prove he’s a great among writers. He knows how to dig deep and has profound things to say about this crazy thing we call life, all while weaving cosmic events through a grounded lens.

Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #4 is a comic that demands to be reread and thoughtfully considered. It’s thought-provoking, expertly drawn, and profoundly moving. While its complexity might require you to really focus, the rewards are immense. This series is a true testament to the power of mature, character-driven storytelling in comics, demonstrating how even a seemingly minor character can be utilized to explore the most profound questions of all.
