Batman: Dark Patterns is finally out in trade, and it’s easily the most anticipated trade paperback (MATP) release for the week. It’s a collection of four self-contained, street-level mysteries that throw Bruce right back into his early days as a detective. No cosmic gods or multiversal reboots are found here. It’s just Batman in Gotham City, acting as a healing presence while investigating the weirdest stuff the city has to offer. This collection captures a specific era where Batman was just a guy figuring things out, and the results are some of the best detective work we’ve seen in years.
Why Dan Watters Nailed the Detective Vibe
Writer Dan Watters really leaned into the “cool detective” energy for this one. It feels like those grounded classics like Batman: Year One or The Long Halloween, but with a heavy focus on the resilience of the actual citizens. This collection proves that Bruce is at his best when he’s just a man with a genius mind and a lot of determination. It captures a specific atmosphere that feels both classic and entirely new. You’ll appreciate how the mysteries unfold without relying on massive crossover events. Batman: Dark Patterns feels authentic. It feels like a return to the gutters where Batman belongs.
Hayden Sherman is the Real Star of the Show
The artwork is the biggest standout of Batman: Dark Patterns. Hayden Sherman was doing double duty on this title and Absolute Wonder Woman at the same time, and he still absolutely nailed it. It’s hard to explain Sherman’s artwork without sounding like you’re just gushing. His layouts are some of the most ingenious in the business right now. He takes the phrase “sequential art” to its absolute apex. The visuals are gnarly and creative. If you want to see a book where the art actually blows you away while the hero solves crimes, this is it.
