‘DC X Sonic the Hedgehog’ #3 Review: A Hilarious and Thrilling Mashup

DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #3 delivers on the promise of its premise with an issue brimming with inventive scenarios and laugh-out-loud moments. Writer Ian Flynn and artist Adam Bryce Thomas, with colorist Matt Herms, truly embrace the potential of this crossover, shifting the story to see Team Sonic step up to fill the void left by the mysteriously vanished Justice League.

The issue cleverly divides our heroes, placing them in the familiar stomping grounds of their DC counterparts. Tails’ temporary cyborg enhancements and partnership with the Teen Titans feel natural, and the individual pairings feel inspired. Silver’s cosmic clash with Sinestro and Parallax as a Green Lantern is visually stunning, amplified by Herms’ vibrant colors and his funny jab about the many human Green Lantern members was hilarious and well placed. Amy’s dynamic with Hawkgirl and Supergirl in Washington, D.C. is a delightful display of power and camaraderie. Shadow’s brooding presence in Gotham, facing off against the Joker with a far less tolerant attitude than Batman, provides a darkly comedic edge. Sonic’s high-speed taunting of the Reverse Flash is pure, unadulterated fun, capturing the essence of both characters perfectly.

The standout moment undoubtedly belongs to Knuckles’ interaction with Lex Luthor. Flynn’s writing shines here, with Luthor’s misguided attempts to manipulate the echidna and Knuckles’ deadpan reactions creating genuinely hilarious moments. The reveal that each villain possesses a Chaos Emerald adds a compelling layer to the overarching plot, hinting at a larger scheme at play.

Thomas’ artwork is a highlight throughout the issue. He masterfully redesigns the Sonic characters with nods to their Justice League stand-ins, from Silver’s Green Lantern energy constructs to Sonic’s sleek Flash suit. These aren’t just cosmetic changes; they inform the action and showcase how well the Sonic crew can adapt to the DC universe’s power dynamics in just one issue. His action sequences are dynamic, seamlessly blending Sonic Team’s Justice League-inspired signature moves against some of DC’s iconic villains’ abilities. Shadow’s swift takedown of the Joker and Amy’s hammer-wielding against Grodd, even with the Lasso of Truth, are particularly well-executed. Most importantly, the story juggles multiple storylines effectively, but never feels too cluttered.

The initial reveal of Sonic characters in Justice League-inspired costumes felt like a fun one-off, but DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #3 proves it was a deliberate and brilliant narrative choice. This issue isn’t just a superficial mashup; it delves into the personalities of both sets of characters, creating genuinely entertaining and often funny interactions. The creative team clearly had a blast exploring these new dynamics, and that infectious energy translates directly to the reader.

DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #3 is a resounding success. It’s a crossover that understands the core appeal of both franchises and isn’t afraid to have fun with the inherent absurdity of the situation. This series continues to surprise and delight, proving that sometimes, the most unexpected team-ups can yield the most entertaining results!
