The revival of Captain Planet and the Planeteers is in full swing, and issue #3 of the series is a thrilling ride that proves this iconic hero is as relevant as ever. David Pepose and Emmanuel Casallos have masterfully blended the nostalgia of the original ’90s cartoon with a fresh, modern storyline that’s perfect for both longtime fans and new readers.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers #3 is a smart and action-packed read that continues to revive a classic hero for a new generation. Pepose’s writing is a major highlight. He doesn’t just recreate the Planeteers; he gives them a new depth, showing them grapple with the weight of their mission in a world that’s even more cynical than the one they left behind. Kwame’s steady leadership and Gi’s scientific mind are all on display, but you also feel their vulnerability as they face a new challenge, and now their powers have been stripped away.

The story wastes no time, dropping us right into the action as the Planeteers try to find a way to locate Gaia, all while being hunted by Plunder. When the villainous Duke Nukem ambushes them, Captain Planet swoops in to save the day in a blaze of glory. Casallos’s artwork makes Captain Planet’s entrance a spectacle to behold; the vibrant colors and dynamic lines truly make him pop off the page. It’s a key reason why this series feels both familiar and entirely new.

The comic introduces a clever plot twist: when Captain Planet appears, the Planeteers lose their powers. While I’m unsure if this big detail is new to the lore, it effectively raises the stakes and forces the team to rely on their wits and unique skills to survive. After a desperate play from Captain Planet gives them a chance to escape, they go undercover to continue their search for Gaia.

Gi leads them to a scientist who might be able to help, but in a move that shows how dangerous their world has become, they quickly discover this scientist is the infamous Dr. Blight, who is now working for Plunder. This confrontation pushes the team to the brink, and the constant danger takes a toll on one of them, leading to a cliffhanger that will have you thinking about what will happen next.

This issue is packed with action and fascinating revelations. We learn that Captain Planet has been around for a very long time, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs, when he failed to stop the asteroid that caused their extinction. This new backstory adds a layer of weight and foreshadows an even bigger conflict to come, which adds a sense of urgency and danger to their current mission.

This team has proven that Captain Planet’s message is as vital as ever, and it’s being offered with style, heart, and a whole lot of action.
