Mark Waid and Adrian Gutierrez deliver a triumphant, self-contained story in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40, proving once again why this series remains a highlight in DC’s catalog. Eschewing the ongoing “We Are Yesterday” crossover, this issue offers a refreshing breather that is incredibly action-packed and deeply character-driven.

The premise is brilliantly unique: Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent find themselves trapped on a late-night podcast hosted by a Joe Rogan-esque figure, Frank Rotsler, leaving their civilian identities exposed while a giant kaiju attacks Metropolis. This clever setup immediately creates tension and forces the World’s Finest to rely on their wits and, more importantly, their incomparable supporting casts.

DC Comics

This is where the issue truly shines. Waid’s genius for characterization is on full display as Perry White, Lois Lane, and Commissioner Gordon take center stage, leveraging their journalistic instincts and detective skills to unravel the mystery behind the monster. Seeing these often-underappreciated characters lead the charge is immensely satisfying, demonstrating their importance to the DC Universe beyond simply being supporting players. Their banter, drive, and resourcefulness are just as engaging as the superheroics.

And when it comes to superheroics, Gutierrez’s art absolutely delivers. Following the incredible Dan Mora is no easy feat, but Gutierrez not only rises to the challenge but delivers perhaps his best work yet. The kaiju design is fantastic, menacing yet unique, and the ensuing battle is a visual feast. Batman’s mech suit, in particular, is a standout, an impressive piece of engineering that demands an action figure. Gutierrez’s dynamic paneling and vibrant colors bring the entire chaotic spectacle to life, whether it’s Perry and Gordon racing through a collapsing building or Superman delivering a powerful punch.

DC Comics

While the market might be a bit saturated with superheroes vs. giant monsters stories, World’s Finest #40 manages to feel fresh thanks to its unique perspective and sharp commentary on influencer culture. It’s a self-contained gem that highlights the enduring appeal of Batman and Superman, not just as powerful heroes, but as figures surrounded by equally capable and compelling allies.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40 is an immensely enjoyable read. It’s an excellent jumping-on point for new readers and a fantastic reminder for long-time fans of why this series continues to be one of the best books on the stands. Waid and Gutierrez have crafted a near-perfect single issue that exemplifies the fun, heart, and heroism that define the “World’s Finest” legacy.
