It’s been a long, brutal journey for Arthur Curry. After losing his kingdom, his people, and his family, he’s finally returned to Earth. But he’s not the same man who left; he’s way more powerful now. Writer Jeremy Adams and artist John Timms have put Aquaman through the wringer for eight issues, and in Aquaman #9, he emerges with new powers, new allies, and a new story to tell.
This issue kicks off a new arc in a big way. Aquaman’s “Justice League Blue” has arrived back on Earth just in time to find the real Justice League in a pitched battle with a possessed Superman. While the Superman-possessed trope can feel overdone, the payoff here is worth it. Aquaman shows up, takes a punch from the Man of Steel, and holds his own, all with new electricity-based powers. It’s a badass moment that showcases how far he’s come.
Beyond the big, splashy fight, Adams also finds space for some great small moments. From Wonder Woman and Batman’s confused commentary on Aquaman’s new crew to a hilarious reunion between Superman and his ex, Lori Lemaris, the dialogue is sharp and entertaining.
Timms and colorist Rex Lokus elevate their artwork to match the monumental moments in this issue. The opening sequence, showing Mera’s funeral, is both sad and beautiful, capturing the somber emotional weight of the issue. The one-shot panel of Aquaman taking on Superman is a showstopper, and the team’s ability to make every detail, from the drops of water to the vibrant explosions, feel so dynamic is truly a sight to behold. Dave Sharpe’s lettering adds to the bombastic feel of the whole issue.
This issue also brings back a fan-favorite look for Arthur, with a clean-shaven face and keeping the regal high-collar. It’s a welcome change that reinforces his role as a powerful, confident leader.
This series has done a fantastic job of upgrading Aquaman’s presence in the DCU. Making him the new avatar of the Blue, a primal mystical force like the Green and the Red, opening up a world of possibilities for his future. But even with all the new power and allies, there are still a lot of unanswered questions remaining. The biggest one comes from the cliffhanger at the end of the issue, a shocking twist that flips everything on its head. While the twist might feel like a bait and switch after the heavy emotional conclusion of the last issue, it’s clear that Adams has a lot more in store for the King of Atlantis.
Overall, Aquaman #9 is a powerful and engaging start to the next chapter of Arthur’s story. It’s a fantastic chapter for longtime fans and a great entry point for anyone looking to jump in.
