Jeremy Adams continues to prove he’s the dream writer for the King of the Seven Seas with his latest offering, Aquaman #6. If you’ve been following his run, you know to expect a blend of grand adventure, emotional resonance, and a deep understanding of what makes Arthur Curry such a compelling hero. This issue is no different, serving up exciting action, a surprising reveal, and a continued exploration of Arthur’s journey.
The comic opens deep within “The Blue,” days ago, where we find captive gods in Dagon’s prisons. Fed up with their imprisonment, one god chooses to challenge him, and let’s just say it doesn’t end well. These sea gods, some even sea alien gods, have been pulled to the blue by Dagon for some unknown reason, setting up a mysterious and ominous tone right from the start. We then cut to an epic splash page of Aquaman dealing with a giant sea kaiju, beautifully rendered by Michael Shelfer. Seriously, this thing is massive and terrifying! Rex Lokus’s dark green colors make the creature pop and look uniquely scary. Arthur does his best against this beast, but it’s not following his commands. That’s when Arion swoops in with a magical save, stalling the creature, but only for a bit. It’s Aquaman with some quick thinking and even faster “footwork” that pushes the sub away from the giant sea creature.
We then get a somber moment between Aquaman and Vivienne. Arthur is pondering if his people are even okay; it’s been six long issues since they were abducted, and you can feel his concern. The issue then shifts to the “Haven of Divine Deep” (quite a mouthful!), where Arthur and his crew try to find supplies for their journey. Instead, they stumble upon some dead sea gods, and they look pissed! The comic then ends with some great action and a reveal I honestly didn’t see coming, but a very welcome surprise.

This series has been a real game-changer for Arthur. Watching him face unprecedented challenges that constantly push his abilities to their limits has been thrilling. With every new obstacle writer Jeremy Adams and his team introduce, we see Arthur evolve and grow stronger. Adams also does a fantastic job of balancing high-stakes action with genuine character moments, making for a truly engaging read. I mean, that reveal will definitely have long-time fans cheering! It really shows Adams’s vision for the character’s future, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
And then there’s Michael Shelfer’s art. From the majestic underwater vistas to the dynamic combat sequences, every panel is rendered with incredible detail and energy. Shelfer’s ability to convey emotion through facial expressions is particularly noteworthy, allowing the reader to connect with the characters on a personal level. The muted, evocative, almost “dirty” color palette perfectly captures the diverse environments Aquaman navigates and the dark undead enemies he faces in the issue. The lettering is also top-notch, with the black speech bubbles for the undead sea gods, combined with Shelfer’s great designs, making them even scarier. It’s also a cool throwback to issue #2, referencing the black goo that was inside Vivienne/Jenny Greenteeth.
DC Comics
If there’s a downside, and I’ve said this many times in past reviews, it is that this series is a slow burn. Adams’ plotting is very deliberate, and he writes like he’s in it for the long haul. While most readers might want an earlier payoff, this series delivers it in tiny, bite-sized pieces. Still, it remains an incredibly enjoyable time to be an Aquaman fan.
Aquaman #6 is a stunning example of a creative team firing on all cylinders, delivering a grand adventure with emotional depth and thrilling action. If you’ve ever doubted Aquaman’s place among DC’s top heroes and have slept on this series, do yourself a huge favor and pick it up.
