‘Absolute Green Lantern’ #3 Offers Green Mysteries & Golden Questions

June 4, 2025

Phillip Creary June 4 2025

Absolute Green Lantern #3 dives deeper into the mysterious green construct blanketing the town of Evergreen, Nevada. Written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Jahnoy Lindsey, this issue offers a quick read packed with intriguing information, though it does leave you hanging.

The comic kicks off with John Stewart and Todd discussing the disruptive green construct that’s causing chaos in their town. Ever the strategist, John theorizes that a yellow ring might hold the key to understanding its purpose. This immediately brings to mind classic Green Lantern lore and hints at a potential conflict with the “gold” impurity, a long-standing foe of the Green Lanterns.

We then rejoin Jo and Hal in the diner, where their confrontation escalates. Lindsey’s artwork truly shines here, capturing the dynamic power struggle between the two. The panels burst with black, green, and hints of purple, vividly illustrating Hal’s struggle to control his overwhelming curse and Jo’s blossoming abilities. It’s clear that Hal is losing the fight against his power, adding a layer of tension to the story, but by the issue’s end, he’s seemingly in control?

The plot takes an interesting turn with a jump to what appears to be the present. We see John Stewart visiting Jo to discuss her wedding ring, and later, Hal, Jo, and John are seen testing a theory with an adorable Blue Devil gold figure.

The issue ends on a dramatic cliffhanger: Abin Sur reappears and seemingly “judges” John, leading to an abrupt and shocking conclusion that leaves readers with more questions than answers, particularly regarding Abin Sur’s intentions and the ultimate fate of John Stewart.

Jahnoy Lindsey’s artwork in Absolute Green Lantern #3 is a mixed bag. When it’s good, it’s genuinely great, especially during the action sequences. The fight between Hal and Jo is a prime example, with energy bursting from the panels, showcasing a vibrant and dynamic display of power. Lindsey’s use of color is consistently excellent, with bright and vibrant hues that elevate the visual experience. He shines when given the opportunity to unleash his creative prowess.

However, there are moments where the art falls short. Some scenes appear less refined and almost rough, giving the impression of being hastily drawn. These inconsistencies can be jarring and detract from the overall polish of the comic. Despite these minor missteps, when Lindsey is allowed to express his vision fully, his artwork truly enhances the storytelling.

Absolute Green Lantern #3 is an interesting, albeit brief, entry that lays down crucial plot points for the series. While the pacing could be quicker, and the art has some minor inconsistencies, the intriguing mystery and the captivating character interactions make it a worthwhile read for Green Lantern fans.
