Jamal Campbell’s Zatanna #6 brings a phenomenal close to what has been a captivating miniseries, solidifying its place as an instant classic for the Mistress of Magic. Campbell, pulling double duty as both writer and artist, has delivered a singular, cohesive vision that perfectly showcases Zatanna’s power, compassion, and her unique standing in the DC Universe.
The comic opens at the heart of the series’ overarching threat, revealing the true motivations behind Princess Allura’s vendetta against Zatanna and her family. The narrative ties it directly to Zatanna’s mother, Sindella, and her past actions, adding significant depth to Zatanna’s already rich mythos.
Campbell’s art continues to be the undisputed highlight of the series. Seriously, every single panel is a feast for the eyes. From the action sequences to the more intimate, emotional moments, the visuals are consistently magical. The vibrant colors and striking compositions elevate the mystical elements, making Zatanna’s spells feel wondrous and impactful. Even her backwards-speak magic, which can sometimes be clunky, is expertly integrated here, and it just looks colorful and creative. With its walls of red flesh, the Crimson Palace becomes a formidable and twisted set piece as well in this issue, showcasing a spectacular array of varied color palettes.

Beyond the visual spectacle, Zatanna #6 excels in its characterization. Zatanna is portrayed with a perfect balance of cunning and profound compassion when dealing with those who are misguided or victims of manipulation. Her strategic thinking and willingness to understand her enemies, even while fighting them, shine through here, making her an incredibly admirable protagonist. The inclusion of Wonder Woman and The Justice League Dark in the final push is a welcome touch, utilizing the Lasso of Truth in a clever way to counter the villain’s deception. Zatanna is portrayed here as a boss girl with a rich history and a lot of interesting, magical friends, and I’m all for it.
This six-issue series has its ups and downs, and not every moment hits perfectly. But overall, it does a great job of showing what a day in the life is like for this working-class superhero. Even though she comes from a magical family and has super friends, she’s just like us. She has her fears, flaws, and desires, along with a multitude of responsibilities, and that’s what makes her such a compelling character to read about.
There are still some things left hanging, though. What about Undead Adam, who’s still out there somewhere? And Alurra, the new villain, is now a cute bunny spirit? It’s obvious Campbell had a lot more story to tell that just didn’t fit in. Maybe we’ll see it in a sequel?
