The post-Krakoa landscape has left the mutant population fractured and vulnerable. In the pages of X-Men United #1, written by Eve Ewing with art by Tiago Palma, a new solution emerges from the mind of the White Queen. Emma Frost has officially opened the doors to Graymatter Lane, a conceptual campus designed to serve as the next evolution of mutant education. Unlike the physical grounds of the Xavier Institute or the biological sovereignty of Krakoa, Graymatter Lane exists entirely within the psychic plane.

X-MEN UNITED (2026) #1 by Eve Ewing and Tiago Palma
Establishing a school without a physical address is a strategic move by Emma Frost, drawing on her deep history as an educator. This “mind palace” allows mutants from across the globe to congregate, train, and socialize regardless of their geographic location. Editor Tom Brevoort explains that this isn’t just a classroom, but a broader environment for growth.
“The idea behind Graymatter Lane is that it’s more than simply a school. Rather, it’s a campus environment wherein mutants of all sorts from across the globe can meet and interact and develop together. In that, it’s the end product of Emma’s many years as an educator, from the Massachusetts Academy to her time in Genosha.”
Safety vs. Community: The Cyclops Conflict
X-MEN UNITED (2026) #2 by Eve Ewing and Tiago Palma
While the psychic nature of the school offers unique accessibility, it hasn’t completely eased the concerns of leaders like Cyclops. Having witnessed the destruction of previous mutant strongholds, Scott Summers remains wary of any initiative that gathers mutants in large numbers. Brevoort notes that this philosophical divide is the engine for the series’ drama.
“Scott has been on the front lines on two separate occasions in which mutantkind gathered in large numbers—first at Utopia and more recently on Krakoa—and in both instances, they made themselves an irresistible target to those who would do them harm. So he’s skeptical that Emma’s ideas for the new campus pass the Health and Safety Test.”
Familiar Faces and New Blood

The student body of Graymatter Lane will feature a mix of established fan favorites and fresh additions to the X-Canon. Readers have already been introduced to a new character named Mal in the first issue. This initiative aims to reclaim the core tenet of the X-Men’s history: a safe haven for those just discovering their powers.
“On the most fundamental level, it’s a place where those who are experiencing the first blush of their onset mutantdom can find the company of fellow travelers and learn how to best use the gifts they’ve been endowed with for the betterment of all.”
