Marvel is officially turning up the heat this spring with the introduction of Torment, a terrifying new super-powered serial killer set to terrorize the Spider-Verse. While the chaos begins in next month’s Death Spiral crossover, the full truth behind this new threat will be revealed this May in the one-shot AMAZING SPIDER-MAN/VENOM: DEATH SPIRAL BODY COUNT #1.

A New Level of Terror
The Death Spiral event, written by Charles Soule, Joe Kelly, and Al Ewing, will tear through the pages of Amazing Spider-Man and Venom starting in February. The story places Peter Parker on a collision course with Mary Jane Watson (Venom) and Eddie Brock (Carnage) as they all find themselves in Torment’s crosshairs.
Torment isn’t just another face in the crowd; he is a predator who has spent his time hunting these three icons, utilizing a lethal razor whip to close in for the kill. Following the conclusion of the main crossover in April, the May one-shot will dive deep into the character’s history.
“Spider-Man was always a favorite of mine, and getting to write him a bit – not to mention Venom and Carnage – how could it get better? Well, adding a new villain to his rogue’s gallery, and even getting to design his origin… that would probably do it,” reveals Soule. “Torment is a pretty intense character, and figuring out a beginning for him that could build to what we see him do in Death Spiral was a fantastic challenge. I think readers will be chilled and thrilled!”

“Worse Than Carnage”
For decades, Cletus Kasady has been the gold standard for symbiotic slayers, but Marvel editors suggest that Torment might just take the crown. Unlike the villains we are used to seeing in these titles, Torment brings a different kind of horror to the table.
“When Carnage hit the comic page it made you think Venom wasn’t that bad,” says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe. “Torment does that to Carnage here. He’s not a symbiote… he’s something much, much worse. And when you read what Charles Soule and Kev Walker serve up here with his origin… you may want to get a nightlight.”
