Space Ghost has always been one of those delightfully weird, classic Hanna-Barbera characters, and Space Ghost Vol. 2 #4 by David Pepose and Jonathan Lau continues to prove he’s a perfect fit for a modern, high-stakes space opera. This issue is a non-stop, action-packed thrill ride that will leave you absolutely buzzing.
The issue opens with high stakes already in play. Space Ghost, along with his wards Jan and Jace, is trying to keep the peace on Planet Liquo. The goal is a diplomatic summit between two empires that have been at each other’s throats for centuries: the Crystalline Empire, led by Emperor Glasstor, and the Kingdom of the Space Sharks, led by King Remora. Yes, you read that right: Space Sharks versus Ice Aliens. This is the kind of beautifully surreal, high-octane cosmic opera that only comics can deliver, and frankly, I’m eating it up.
The fragile truce is immediately shattered when a sniper opens fire. Chaos erupts, and the peace summit instantly devolves into all-out war. The Space Ghost team springs into action, but the assassin escapes, leaving behind a convenient scapegoat. Suddenly, Space Ghost isn’t just a guard; he’s a cosmic vigilante racing against the clock to prevent a millennia-old intergalactic war from exploding, all while trying to spring one of his wards out of jail!
The art by Jonathan Lau is simply phenomenal. I mean, Space Ghost has never looked this good. The artwork is sharp and dynamic, especially in the action sequences. You can feel the sheer power as the Crystalline Empire’s ships start firing on Remora’s fleet and the crystalline giant, Emperor Glasstor, shouts his battle commands. The colors by Andrew Dalhouse elevate the whole spectacle, from the blood-red, cloud-strewn atmosphere of Planet Liquo to the sharp blue and white of Glasstor’s Centurions. It all just looks badass, especially those visuals of Space Ghost protecting the dignitaries and breaking the atmospheric barrier.
The climax is a true visual spectacle and a massive escalation. Emperor Glasstor decides to end the skirmishes and unleashes Project Shardfall, a massive missile designed to rip through Planet Liquo and erase six billion lives. To stop it, Space Ghost knows he has only one option: a direct, kamikaze-style interception.
This issue perfectly balances political intrigue with non-stop spectacle, delivering a powerful punch that sets up a truly massive war for the next issue. The episodic format works perfectly here, unapologetically leveraging all the wild, random quirkiness that this universe has offers. For anyone who loves their cosmic adventure served with a huge dose of eye-octane action, grab Space Ghost.
