New Blood at Avengers Academy: Diving Deep with Blackheart and Teen Immortus

Avengers Academy: Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic has been shaking up the Marvel Universe, introducing a fresh class of heroes-in-training. Now, roughly 50 issues in, two unexpected additions have joined the ranks: Blackheart, Mephisto’s demonic son, and Teen Immortus, the time-traveler once destined to become Kang.

Avengers Academy: Assemble (2025) #1.

“Avengers Academy” creators Anthony Oliveira and Bailie Rosenlund discuss the recent additions of Blackheart and Teen Immortus to the comic series, highlighting their unique roles and character development.

Oliveira explains Blackheart’s human form isn’t a new concept, but this time, he’s truly mortal, forcing him to confront human experiences and question his inherently evil nature. He notes Blackheart’s unique origin as a young demon, not a fallen angel or human, which makes him relatable to young adults grappling with identity.

Avengers Academy: Assemble (2025) #1.

Rosenlund details Blackheart’s design, emphasizing the “18ish, Latino, lean swimmer’s bod, chaotically bisexual, while also being chock full of Catholic guilt” guidelines. She aimed to retain his demonic form’s “beautiful and tragic” essence, incorporating sad, hooded eyes and red irises, and shaping his hair to reflect his original silhouette.

The rose motif for Blackheart, pulled from his first appearance in Daredevil (1964) #270, symbolizes his complex nature, a beautiful bloom amidst thorns. This motif is integrated into his tattoos and wardrobe.

Teen Immortus’s redesign, according to Rosenlund, aimed for a “time-space-wizard-monk” look, blending Kang and Iron Lad elements. Key features include the Kang lines in his mask, his time-space belt, and his Iron Lad armor as a base, with a triadic color palette.

Avengers Academy: Assemble (2025) #1.

Oliveira finds Teen Immortus fascinating as a foil to Blackheart, both grappling with a predetermined villainous path. Immortus, having averted his tyrannical future at great cost, now fears re-engaging with reality might jeopardize the peaceful future he created.

Both characters bring a unique dynamic to the Avengers Academy team, exploring the theme of heroism amidst inherent darkness. Blackheart is described as “grumpy, even malefic,” while Immortus is a “blithe, gentle soul,” almost detached after achieving his “perfect” future.

Avengers Academy: Assemble (2025) #1.

New issues of Avengers Academy: Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic release weekly on Marvel Unlimited. The first six issues are also now available in print as Avengers Academy: Assemble (2025) #1.

DC’s “All In” initiative unleashes its first major crossover, We Are Yesterday. This six-part epic, spearheaded by Mark Waid, spans Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, Justice League Unlimited, and the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual, with a team of co-writers and artists contributing to the grand event.

The first chapter debuts on April 16th in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38, pitting Gorilla Grodd against Superman and Batman. Grodd’s psychic abilities seemingly give him glimpses into the future, and he may even hold clues to Darkseid’s death!

The second part of the crossover event unfolds in Justice League Unlimited #6, written by Mark Waid with art by Travis Moore. As the mystery of the Inferno Cult deepens, the League faces a terrifying revelation: the cult’s ranks include some of their most formidable foes, from Lex Luthor and The Joker to Cheetah.

Batman and his allies pose confidently against a vibrant red background, showcasing their unity and strength.

Part three arrives on April 30th with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual. Written by Mark Waid, Christopher Cantwell, and Morgan Hampton, with art by Dan McDaid and Clayton Henry, this issue reveals the secret origins of DC’s premier supervillain team and marks the World’s Finest debut of Green Lantern John Stewart.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38 hits shelves on April 16th, followed by Justice League Unlimited #6 on April 23rd. Rounding out the month, the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual arrives on April 30th.

Review

This crossover event promises to be an exciting expansion of the narratives unfolding in both Batman/Superman: World’s Finest and Justice League Unlimited, especially with Mark Waid at the helm of both titles! The “Inferno” storyline in Justice League Unlimited has been a slow burn. With that said, I am thrilled at the prospect of this event propelling us further into DC’s ambitious “All-In” initiative.
