With the inferno raging, the Justice League launches a desperate, last-ditch effort to staunch the devastating wounds inflicted upon the Amazon rainforest. With mystery and intrigue swirling amidst the chaos, Mark Waid and Dan Mora deliver a relentless barrage of action, pushing the story forward with unwavering momentum. But can even the Justice League extinguish a wildfire of mystery and mayhem in the Amazon’s dying heart? Let’s find out!

Tefe Holland, Swamp Thing’s daughter, is enjoying her Baton Rouge garden when Mr. Terrific teleports in with a Justice League offer. She hilariously rejects the membership guard, but the burning Green leaves her no choice. He zaps them to the Amazon, where the League is overwhelmed by raging fires. Meanwhile, Batman tracks a powerless Martian Manhunter hiding in Egypt, who describes his lost telepathy as “blindness and deafness.” Back in the Amazon, Tefe rescues the new Swamp Thing, Levi, and with some magical help regrows the rain forest. The issue ends with Inferno seemingly defeated, for now.

Justice League Unlimited #4 pushes the narrative forward with a masterfully woven blend of action, tension, and subtle character moments, deepening the League’s internal conflicts and raising the stakes dramatically. Mark Waid and Dan Mora continue to deliver what feels like a genuinely cinematic Justice League experience. The issue portrays the League’s struggle against overwhelming odds, with Mr. Terrific emerging as a standout. His unwavering composure, even as the weight of the situation bears down on him, is palpable. Waid’s encyclopedic knowledge of DC lore shines, particularly in the inclusion of Tefe Holland, a delightful and underutilized character. Another highlight is the exploration of DC’s diverse magic users and the rich tapestry of history they represent.

The poignant exchange between Batman and Martian Manhunter lends significant emotional weight. While it might seem counterintuitive for J’onn to feel powerless without his telepathy, given his formidable array of other abilities, Batman’s perspective—that it’s akin to losing a vital sense—resonates. It will be compelling to see how J’onn adapts.

Intriguingly, the Inferno agent’s veiled reference to Aquaman hints at a potential connection, sparking further curiosity. The visual of a rainforest-shaped Swamp Thing, spanning countries, is truly epic, a testament to Mora’s artistic brilliance. Finally, the Inferno plotline progresses, though the mystery surrounding their identity and ultimate goal remains tantalizingly unresolved.

You can almost hear the ‘Whaboom’ of the flames and the ‘Skucchh’ as Swamp Thing demolishes Inferno’s pillars, thanks to Ariana Maher’s dynamic lettering. Mora’s artwork perfectly complements this, capturing the League’s pure elation. And Tamra Bonvillain’s colors are a feast for the eyes, with vibrant neon greens that pop and a seamless blend of fiery reds and oranges that create a truly immersive experience.

Justice League Unlimited #4 delivers a high-octane, visually stunning chapter as the League battles to save the Amazon, featuring compelling character moments and intricate plot developments. The inclusion of Tefe Holland and the exploration of DC’s magical elements add depth, while the Martian Manhunter’s vulnerability and the hints of Inferno’s larger plot create intriguing tension. Dan Mora’s dynamic artwork and Tamra Bonvillain’s vibrant colors bring the story’s epic scale to life, making this issue a standout in the series.
