The War Wheels are no more, having met their explosive end in issue #1! Now, the rest of the League joins Batman and Blue Beetle, who are hot on the trail of a series of kidnappings. Their investigation leads them into a nearby forest, where they uncover a terrifying discovery: a horde of parademons… hatchling parademons, to be precise! This issue also introduces a host of new faces, some fresh to the scene and others, well, let’s just say they’re seasoned veterans (we’re looking at you, Dr. Occult). And that’s not all – we’re throwing some serious character twists into the mix, shaking up the team dynamic. Can the Justice League save the planet and keep it all together? Let’s find out!
The issue kicks off with a bang – another kidnapping, this time thwarted by the Justice League. Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Black Lightning, Mary Marvel, Star Sapphire, and Dr. Occult burst onto the scene through a Boom Tube. We find Batman in rough shape – his suit torn, bloodied, and bearing ominous claw marks. Ever the tactician, he immediately takes command, directing the League to the most critical areas. The “Atom Project” subplot thickens as Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi struggle in Singapore. They’re trying to reclaim Atom Smasher’s errant powers from a now-gigantic petty criminal, and the transfer proves anything but smooth. Meanwhile, the dynamic duo of Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel (a pairing that looks fantastic) attempt to launch a parademon nest into space, only to find themselves in a colossal predicament. Martian Manhunter and Dr. Occult search for the missing children, revealing that the Martian’s powers haven’t fully returned since Absolute Power. With Dr. Occult’s magic, they rescue the hostages, but the victory comes at a price for the Justice League.

This issue was fantastic. It was a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride, filled with beloved DC Universe characters. The twist at the end was just the cherry on top. Mark Waid continues to expertly manage a sprawling cast, and his choices for each mission are always exciting, truly living up to the “Unlimited” title. While the Inferno reveal from the previous issue takes a bit of a backseat here, I’m perfectly fine with that. It looks like we’re settling into a pattern of juggling two or three plot threads per arc.
The character interactions were a highlight. I love a good comic pairing, whether it’s a natural fit or a surprising combination. Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel, with their similar powers and complementary color schemes, feel like a duo destined to team up. The same goes for Martian Manhunter and Dr. Occult – I think this might even be their first time together. Dr. Occult is a deep cut, for sure, but as one of DC’s oldest characters (he even predates Superman!), it’s great to see him.

And the art, Dan Mora is at the top of his game. His clean lines, sleek character models, and incredible designs make everyone look their absolute best. Tamra Bonvillain’s colors are a perfect match, dazzling in their diversity and adding depth to the darker scenes. You could get lost in these panels, discovering new details with every look. Arianna Maher’s lettering perfectly punctuates the action, from the “Kchoom” of explosions to the “Krakoom” of Mary Marvel’s lightning strikes. My one complaint was Martian Manhunter’s reaction to that prime parademon. It felt disproportionately intense, and the reason for such a strong reaction wasn’t established beforehand.
Justice League Unlimited #2 sees the Justice League investigate a series of kidnappings that lead them to a horde of hatchling parademons. This issue introduces new characters like Dr. Occult. It features exciting team-ups, such as Wonder Woman and Mary Marvel, alongside Martian Manhunter and Dr. Occult, as they rescue the hostages. The fast-paced narrative, character interactions, and dynamic art make this a thrilling chapter, despite a minor issue with Martian Manhunter’s reaction at the end.
