Justice League Red #1 is an intriguing start to a new series, creating a covert team to tackle threats the main Justice League can’t see coming. This debut issue, written by Saladin Ahmed, keeps you on your toes from beginning to end.

The comic opens with Red Tornado, the ever-watchful android, running simulations and discovering a terrifying truth: the Justice League’s return will lead to a global tragedy. Believing the League lacks the necessary perspective, Red Tornado takes matters into his own hands, forming a secret “black ops” style team. He sends a signal that makes the Justice League ID cards for both Power Girl and Simon Baz’s Green Lantern light up red, luring them to a hidden ship on the other side of the moon.

While the heroes are skeptical of Red Tornado’s plan, he pleads with them for their help, and they reluctantly agree to go on a mission. Their first task seems straightforward, but a shocking twist reveals that the “weapon of mass destruction” they were sent to destroy was actually a food-growing robot. This revelation leaves Power Girl and Green Lantern questioning Red Tornado’s motives and whether his predictive algorithms are as flawless as he claims. The issue ends on a compelling cliffhanger, leaving you eagerly awaiting what happens next.

While the premise of a secret team isn’t new, Ahmed’s storytelling makes it feel fresh and engaging. The dialogue, however, can be a bit on the nose and stilted at times. Simon Baz’s inner thoughts, for example, often lack subtlety, and some of the exposition feels a little heavy-handed. Despite this, the story is filled with great action and mystery, making you eager to uncover the truth behind Red Tornado’s intentions.

Artist Clayton Henry and colorist Arif Prianto are a phenomenal team, bringing these characters to life with incredible detail. Henry’s art is full of great visual style, and the character designs are fantastic, looking even better in action. The art makes it easy to follow the story and ensures that the comic never feels rushed, despite how much ground it covers. Lucas Gattoni and Ryan Christy also deserve a lot of praise for their work on the lettering. Their talent really shines with Red Tornado, as each word he utters feels filled with power and an ominous tone that captivates the reader. While the art is generally excellent, some readers may find that Henry’s style can suffer from “same-face” syndrome. However, these are minor criticisms of an otherwise great start.

Justice League Red #1 is a great start to a series that promises to be an action-packed thrill ride. The premise is fascinating, the characters are compelling, and the art is top-notch. Despite a few minor issues with the dialogue, the overall narrative is captivating and will leave you excited for the next issue.
