Absolute Wonder Woman #9 throws Diana into the heart of a perilous maze, and nothing will ever be the same again! This issue shifts gears from previous installments, but remains firmly rooted in the myths we’ve all grown to love.

The story wastes no time, throwing us right into the heart of the action as Diana confronts Dr. Poison (literally). The artwork by Hayden Sherman is truly captivating, especially with Jordie Bellaire’s striking black and red color palette that makes Diana’s unarmored look pop. After quickly disabling the menacing tetra-spiders, Diana uncovers a shocking truth: the government is actively working against her, having commissioned Dr. Poison to create these very machines.

Inside the labyrinth, Diana showcases a practical and elegant use of her powers, effortlessly conjuring a torch with a simple word, a neat touch that highlights her magical abilities. The intensity ratchets up as Diana faces the formidable Minotaur, who is already locked in combat with strange, fish-like creatures. Sherman’s art truly shines during these action sequences; the Nemesis Lasso’s vibrant red glow and Bellaire’s rich colors make every panel leap off the page.

Following the intense battle, Diana and the Minotaur, who reveals himself as Ferdinand, share a surprisingly touching conversation about his imprisonment and the mysterious “Amazon” controlling the maze. The issue culminates in a captivating reveal, leaving readers absolutely eager for the next installment.

DC Comics

Absolute Wonder Woman #9 skillfully pivots to a different narrative, yet it remains firmly grounded in the myths we know and love. However, if there is one minor hiccup, it is Diana’s animosity towards Dr. Poison. While perhaps for the best, it does feel a little out of character for the warm and caring Diana we’ve come to know over the previous eight issues.

Sherman’s artwork continues to impress, especially the intricate detail in his backgrounds. Every panel is a testament to his undeniable talent. Look no further than the panel set in the forest near Diana’s new base, the Hieron, which is stunning in its subtlety. The different shades of green and the way Sherman crafts the panels to resemble leaves are a wonderfully creative touch. Moreover, Dr. Poison’s armor design is fantastic; she looks like a terrifying golem, a striking contrast to her personality, which is a testament to the creative team’s vision.

And let’s not forget the fishmen designs, they actually look like fishmen, not generic alien creatures, which is a definite win! Becca Carey’s lettering is subtle yet effective, drawing you deeper into the action. Jordie Bellaire’s colors are a masterclass in contrast, using cool and warm tones that truly pop, especially in the drab, gray maze, where the vibrant hues of the fishmen, the Minotaur, and Diana herself stand out magnificently.
