They don’t jump right into a fight, instead choosing to have a simple talk. We soon learn these two have vastly different philosophies, culminating in an inevitable confrontation that gets cut short by a Kaiju-like monster. The book ends teasing an exciting team-up between the two supers. The Kaiju doesn’t stand a chance.
How does Juan Ferreyra’s art redefine Absolute Hawkman?
Artist and colorer Juan Ferreyra knew Absolute Hawkman had to make an impression, and he made sure he did. Clad in rich golden armor and concealed with white cloth, like some sort of mummy risen from the tomb, he acts as a perfect foil for the brightness of Clark’s red and blues. His wings have a metallic tint to them, giving off the impression they can cut to the bone, while ominous reds shine through the eyeholes on his helmet. It’s another impressive redesign for the Absolute line, and a triumph for Ferreyra.
Is Superman’s idealism a weakness or a strength?
This book shines in its character work, with Aaron giving us a fascinating look at the inner beliefs of both men. Hawkman is cynical, espousing how people can’t make a difference unless they play by the established rules. He lists fallen heroes like they’re nobodies, trying his best to get under Superman’s skin. It gets worse when Hawkman suggests Superman should learn to work with Lazarus, saying they’re simply too powerful to be brought down. This highlights one of their key differences. Hawkman will compromise. Superman won’t.
Aaron also explores the competing philosophies of realism and idealism. Hawkman sees the world for what it is: cold and unfeeling. Things aren’t fair and heroes often fail. Clark is the eternal optimist. He doesn’t just believe everything will be okay; he knows it. It’s one of his greatest traits, but it’s not something that’s easily accomplished even with godlike powers. It’s one thing to save a bus full of people; it’s another to challenge the entire power structure of global politics.
What is the best action scene in Absolute Superman #16?
The fight between Hawkman and Superman may be brief, but it’s the highlight of the book and results in one of the most stunning pages across any Absolute title. On page eighteen, Superman punches Hawkman through multiple buildings and down into the subway system. Ferreyra shows the entire process, using a side perspective to portray Hawkman’s descent on one incredible splash page. Explosive oranges highlight his path through the building as he crashes into the subway platform in a hail of debris. Letterer Becca Carey enhances the scene with multiple sound effects, each crash punctuated by a dynamic KRASH or KROK. This issue is worth the cover price for that page alone.
