Absolute Martian Manhunter #4 throws us right into the sweltering heat of Middleton, where rising temperatures aren’t the only thing sparking conflict. In this issue, John Jones, A.K.A. the Martian Manhunter, faces a city on the brink of chaos as a scorching heatwave turns minor disagreements into full-blown brawls. Can he cool things down before Middleton erupts?

The comic wastes no time cranking up the tension. From the volatile streets of Middleton to the simmering argument between John and his wife, Bridget, her frustration literally etched on her face, thanks to Javier Rodriguez’s art. Needless to say, the atmosphere is thick with unease. Just as their argument reaches a breaking point, John senses a “violent shift in the spectrum,” pulling him into a city consumed by rage. What starts as a “spilled coffee” incident quickly escalates, with prejudices flaring under the oppressive heat, turning minor disputes into full-blown brawls. John tries to quell the chaos by reminding people of shared good deeds, but even he knows he’s just patching symptoms.

The comic then takes a decisive turn, shifting to a raw and honest conversation between Bridget and John. The art brilliantly reflects this emotional depth, with a stark gray background making the colorful moments pop. This pivotal discussion leads to some genuinely jaw-dropping revelations and exposes shocking truths about the White Martians’ ultimate agenda, leaving readers speechless for what comes next.

DC Comics

One particularly insightful aspect of this issue is how Deniz Camp explores Middleton as an immigrant hub. He beautifully illustrates the struggle of adapting to a new culture while holding onto century-old traditions. It’s a fascinating topic to ponder and one that resonates deeply.

Javier Rodriguez’s artwork continues to be a highlight. The way he captures Bridget’s emotions, her loneliness and her doubt about John through her facial expressions is simply brilliant. His use of color, while less overtly vivid than earlier in the series, is even more nuanced and impactful. The searing heat is palpable on every page; people look genuinely angry, and their facial expressions are spot-on. Rodriguez’s panel layouts are exceptionally creative, telling a visual story so effectively that you could almost understand the entire comic without a single word. Bridget’s rainbow silhouette panel, where she’s at her most vulnerable, questioning John’s love, is a powerful moment and easily one of the best panels of the year. The panel immediately after it? Chef’s kiss. It’s a beautifully executed display of vulnerability and emotion.

Deniz Camp’s run on Absolute Martian Manhunter consistently impresses with its blend of deep character exploration, intricate plot, and stunning visuals. Camp masterfully balances the grand, cosmic stakes with intensely personal moments for John. This issue felt feal but never overwhelming, and the dialogue is sharp, moving the plot along while revealing more about the characters.

DC Comics

Last but not least, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou’s minimalist font style elevates the comic. And the onomatopoeia as three explosions go off, while John’s world crumbles around him? Magnificent. This issue is a masterclass in collaborative storytelling, with every element perfectly placed and expertly executed by the entire team.

Absolute Martian Manhunter #4 takes readers into a sweltering Middleton, where a brutal heatwave ignites conflict and exposes deep-seated tensions. The issue masterfully weaves societal struggles, personal revelations, and breathtaking artwork to deliver a compelling and emotionally resonant story. Pick this one up!
