Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma, by Ram V and Anand Radhakrishnan, has been a masterclass in building a compelling story around resurrection. Now, issue #2 significantly ups the ante. While the villain Gashadokuro secretly rebuilds himself from his fiery death in the last issue, growing ever stronger, can Mitch truly maintain his humanity as he navigates the complexities of immortality?
Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma #2 continues its epic tale of resurrection while grounding the extraordinary events in human experience, all vividly brought to life by Radhakrishnan’s artwork. The story revisits Sohei Kawaga in 1945, now transformed into the gleefully grotesque Gashadokuro after consuming Mitch’s flesh in the previous issue, granting him new powers. Meanwhile, Mitch is shown after escaping imprisonment. His amazing spike-like powers instill fear and awe in fellow escapees before a chance encounter later leads him to his wife, Alize.
In the present, Mitch contemplates purpose with the being Samsara, learning that a future Gashadokuro has become a world eater and that Mitch’s final death by time now allows him to revisit and alter his life’s choices. The issue culminates in a shocking revelation about a new energy source and a disturbing conspiracy involving superhero cannibalism, promising a fantastic continuation of the saga.

Ram V and Anand Radhakrishnan are crafting something truly special with Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma. It’s a compelling fusion of striking art and evocative storytelling, skillfully blending traditional elements with fresh ideas. Yet, at its heart, this series showcases world-building at its absolute finest.
V deserves immense praise for crafting a personal story that spans decades. He introduces superhumans capable of resurrecting with new abilities, yet keeps their experiences deeply grounded in the human condition. The story is rich with moments of compassion, joy, and selfless sacrifice, starkly contrasted with the malevolence of those who seek only to destroy, consume, and take. It’s truly riveting material.
Anand Radhakrishnan’s art is exceptional. His visuals are striking and intricately detailed, yet never feel overwhelming. He masterfully uses panel creativity to ensure his artwork packs a punch, perfectly epitomizing the ‘less is more’ philosophy, making every moment of his work a visual treat. This mastery extends to Radhakrishnan’s equally impressive layouts, utilizing a dynamic range of squares and rectangles. What’s particularly interesting, and a testament to this panel’s creativity, is his innovative use of panels as thought ‘bubbles,’ entirely as small, off-white panels filled with text, showcasing the team’s creative ingenuity.
The way the story is unfolding in this comic is particularly engaging. While there’s a central plot, it’s interwoven with varied vignettes that offer glimpses into the desperate lives of individuals Mitch has encountered. This story technique effectively enriches the main storyline, and these interludes often contain sprinkled gems of wisdom, a touch I always adore. While the ultimate direction of the comic remains unclear, I’m eagerly along for this captivating journey.

Last but not least, Mike Spicer’s impressive watercolor-style colors continues to create a gorgeous, dreamlike world within this comic, accessed only through his awesome inks. Aditya Bidikar’s lettering solidifies the atmosphere, especially Mitch’s distinct, eggshell-colored dialogue balloons that suggest a mettled voice. Finally, the combined one-two punch of art and onomatopoeia as Mitch dispatches a soldier in the tunnels was a particularly impactful touch by Radhakrishnan and Bidikar.
