Ultimate Wolverine 6 Review

‘Ultimate Wolverine’ #6 Is a Soulful, Dreamy Journey

If you’re looking for an action-packed Wolverine comic with claws extended and villains sliced, you might be surprised by Ultimate Wolverine #6. But in the best possible way. Chris Condon, along with guest artist Alex Lins and colorist Bryan Valenza, has delivered a truly unique and moving chapter in Logan’s story that sets it apart as a standout in the new Ultimate Universe.

This issue isn’t about external threats; it’s all about the war raging inside Logan’s mind. Still reeling from the lingering effects of his Winter Soldier programming, Logan embarks on a mind-bending journey through his own psyche. Instead of slicing bad guys (at least not physically), he’s confronting the mental chains that bind him, battling twisted reflections of his tormentors and the demons of his past. It’s a great shift in focus and made even more compelling by the unexpected inclusion of Legion as Logan’s guide. This spiritual version of Legion acts as a unique and incredibly effective therapist, leading Logan through his trauma and repressed memories.

Condon’s writing is incredibly introspective and nuanced. He digs deep into themes of identity, memory, and the fight to reclaim one’s true self. The dialogue, especially between Logan and Legion, is rich with meaning, painting a picture of someone who truly understands Logan’s predicament. At its heart, this issue is about breaking free and becoming who you truly are again, and that really resonates here.

The artwork by Alex Lins is a perfect match for this surreal journey. His looser, more stylized approach perfectly captures the disorienting nature of Logan’s internal world. The imagery is beautifully detailed, with fluid and symbolic visuals that enhance the story. Bryan Valenza’s coloring elevates the experience, adding in darker, shadowy tones and gradually introducing more light as Logan progresses through his mental battle.

While Ultimate Wolverine #6 might not be filled with literal explosive action, it is a profoundly satisfying read. It’s a testament to Condon’s skill that he can deliver such a powerful and character-driven story without relying on typical comic book tropes. The issue serves as both a conclusion to Logan’s internal struggle and a powerful reset, hinting at an unleashed Wolverine ready for whatever comes next.
