‘Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion’ #1 sees Miles Morales tour the Ultimate Universe

The Ultimate Universe continues to expand each month, and now it’s taking a new step forward with its first miniseries, Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1. This new chapter centers on Miles Morales as he journeys from the main 616 universe into the freshly re-imagined Ultimate Universe. The reason for his arrival and what he’ll discover there remains a mystery, but with The Maker’s return on the horizon, Miles is potentially the ultimate key to victory.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion is a guided exploration of the Ultimate Universe through the eyes of Miles Morales. By the issue’s end, he’s already encountered Spider-Man and his son Richard and is on the verge of meeting another major group of characters. While there’s a hint that the story could eventually tie into The Maker’s plans, that connection hasn’t fully developed yet. It is a solid first issue with a straightforward start to the story, delivering what it needs to without offering any standout moments.

The issue opens with a concise summary of Miles Morales’ background, told through his journal, explaining his reason for traveling to the Ultimate Universe. His sister has ended up there, and he’s determined to find her before something bad happens. Given that The Maker once offered Miles a place in this universe before disrupting it, there’s a sense that Miles has an important role to play.

Ultimate Spider-Man readers will be delighted with the action-packed battle between The Spot and both current Ultimate Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Richard Parker. It’s exciting to see Richard suited up in the black costume and stepping into the hero role, especially with the strong dynamic between him and his father. While Peter quickly accepting Miles’ sudden arrival and explanation feels a bit too convenient, it keeps the story moving forward without delay.

One of the highlights of the Spider-Men interactions is how they subtly show Miles’s influence on the new Ultimate Universe. Unlike the others, Miles arrives with the experience of the original Ultimate Universe and everything he’s lived through on Earth-616. That perspective comes with the potential risk of disrupting this new world by sharing too much. While this is touched on humorously, it hints at the deeper consequences his presence could have.

That significance is underscored, however, by The Maker’s Council now zeroing in on Miles, simply because of his potential link to The Maker. They aren’t concerned with whether it’s truly Miles or another figure from Earth-616, but in their eyes, any indication of The Maker’s return takes precedence above all else.

While that subplot is compelling, much of the issue feels like wasted time with the Spider-Men running in circles. The Spot could have been used more effectively as an obstacle in Miles’ search for his sister, but instead, he’s underutilized, leading to a sense of narrative stalling until Miles finally decides to act alone.

The introduction of the Ultimates also falls short. Iron Lad, Captain America, and Doctor Doom seem completely unaware of how significant the arrival of someone from another universe truly is. Their lack of awareness highlights how out of step they are compared to The Maker’s Council.

Jonas Scharf’s art in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion is serviceable but unremarkable, giving the issue a standard visual feel rather than the dynamic look of a major event comic. The standout moment comes during the brief Spider-Men vs. Spot sequence, where Scharf’s work shines most, but it’s over quickly. Much of the issue leans on dialogue-heavy scenes, which highlight the lack of visual impact compared to other high-profile titles released at the same time.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion introduces the new Ultimate Universe through Miles’ search for his sister. Issue #1 offers an enjoyable crossover that leans into character-driven moments and strong visual appeal. While the overarching plot and stakes aren’t fully formed yet, it works well as a teaser of what’s to come. Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #1 reads more like a satisfying preview than a full meal, but it’s enough to leave readers eager for the next installment.
