Sensing a moment of weakness, Dormammu has launched a devastating attack on Earth in Ryan North and R.B. Silva’s One World Under Doom #4. With all other heroes trapped in a pocket dimension by the Dark Lord of Chaos, only Doom remains as Earth’s last line of defense. But given his legendary self-reliance, does Doom truly need anyone else to secure his victory?
The answer is emphatically yes, One World Under Doom #4 is an absolute rollercoaster of epic proportions from the first page to the last. One wild ride through a magic-infused battlefield. The comic kicks off with a gut punch: the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men – all gone, seemingly wiped out by Dormammu. (Turns out they’re in a pocket dimension, but the initial impact is still huge.) With the heroes out of the picture, it’s all Doom.
And what does Doom do? He throws down with Dormammu in a no-holds-barred magical slugfest: “Doom did not come to bargain!” (Seriously, Ryan North nailed that delivery. Even knowing it was coming, it was still a fist-pump moment.) The ensuing battle is a visual feast of illusions and deceptions, masterfully illustrated by R.B. Silva.
It’s a chess match of magical prowess, with each mage countering the other’s moves in spectacular fashion. But the tension truly ratchets up when Dormammu gains a crucial advantage, snatching a source of Doom’s power. The issue explodes into a bombastic conclusion, with Doom cornered and down to his last two plays. Trust me, what he does next is pure Doom, and the wait for the next issue is going to be agonizing!

To put it simply, One World Under Doom #4 is epic. From the captivating one-liners to the pulse-pounding action, the breathtaking set pieces, and the sheer grandeur of the magic, especially with the imposing presence of both Doom and Dormammu, it’s a fantastic experience from start to finish. Honestly, I was hooked on every single page. I mean, Doctor Doom uttering “Flame On” and conjuring magical green flames? That’s just undeniably cool. And trust me, the excitement doesn’t stop there.
Ryan North crafts a fight here that transcends mere spectacle; it feels genuinely believable. I was completely invested in the possibility of Doom defeating Dormammu, while simultaneously recognizing the immense power Dormammu possessed. And just when you think Doom might be down for the count, North unveils a brilliant trump card. This masterful layering of character and plot is where North truly shines, hitting it out of the park.
Visually, this book is a masterpiece, thanks to the artistic prowess of R.B. Silva. His work here is beautiful, crisp, bold, and utterly stunning – a significant leap forward from the previous three issues. Silva’s Doom is a force to be reckoned with, menacing and powerful, with designs that solidify his status as a top-tier Marvel villain. His Dormammu is equally impressive, clad in striking black armor with that iconic orange flaming head and sharp red accents. It’s a visual feast. Moreover, Silva’s set pieces deserve immense praise. Even amidst the chaos and destruction, he creates a landscape worthy of a battle between magical titans, overflowing with intricate details.
David Curiel’s colors are equally vibrant, a true celebration of hues. The striking greens, deep purples, Dormammu’s fiery orange, it’s a vast improvement in terms of visual richness compared to earlier installments.
The one minor drawback, perhaps inherent to the concept, is that Doom’s copy magic, while undeniably fun to witness in the moment, does lose a touch of originality as it progresses. However, this doesn’t detract significantly from the overall enjoyment.

Travis Lanham’s lettering in this issue is a standout, delivering clean and impactful onomatopoeia that truly immerses you in the action. Whether it’s the crunch of a landing in rubble, the sizzle of a blinding light, or the guttural rise of purple demons, the sound effects are not only present but visually awesome. It’s a testament to the creative synergy between Silva, Curiel, and Lanham.
One World Under Doom #4 delivers an epic and captivating magical battle between Doom and Dormammu after the other heroes are trapped, showcasing stunning visuals and clever plot twists. This issue is a thrilling and bombastic ride that leaves readers eagerly anticipating Doom’s next move in this high-stakes conflict.
