Unveiling the Competitors: Image Comics Prepares for Exquisite Corpses

April 30, 2025

The highly anticipated horror series Exquisite Corpses is hitting shelves this May from Image Comics and Tynion IV, and the killer roster is already looking fierce. Masterminded by horror giants James Tynion IV (The Department of Truth) and Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin), this series introduces a deadly game played by America’s wealthiest families every five years.

The rules are simple: twelve of the world’s deadliest assassins are unleashed on a small town – this year, the unfortunate residents of Oak Valley, Maine – with only one goal: be the last killer standing. For the townsfolk? Just survive the night.

So far, seven of the twelve competitors have been revealed, with new killers announced weekly. The latest addition is the terrifying Rascal Randy, a maniac in a bunny suit who uses his bare (well, heavily gloved) hands as weapons. As Tynion IV puts it, Randy truly embodies the series’ spirit: “big, bombastic, eye-catching costume, but it’s only when you look into the mouth of the beast that you’re met with the true horror.”

Rascal Randy joins an already formidable lineup:

  • Leopold Strong (North Carolina | The Hammer | Kill Count: 23): A hulking figure wielding a massive hammer only he can lift.
  • Recluse (Rhode Island | The Rope | Kill Count: 64): A master of snares and garrotes, preferring patient traps.
  • Fox Mask Killer (New York | The Sword | Kill Count: 87): An efficient, enigmatic swordswoman feared even by other assassins.
  • Pretty Boy (Georgia | The Axe | Kill Count: 36): A charming killer who contrasts his good looks with brutal axe violence.
  • Lady Carolina (South Carolina | The Arrow | Kill Count: 7): A skilled noblewoman breaking tradition by entering the games herself.
  • The Congregation (New Hampshire | The Knife | Kill Count: 39): A face-wearing fanatic who kills as a tribute to dark gods.

What makes Exquisite Corpses even more unique is its collaborative creation process. Mirroring the ‘exquisite corpse’ game, each issue of the initial 13-issue arc will be passed from one creator to the next, building the story collaboratively. Joining Tynion IV and Walsh is a stellar team: Adam Gorham, Becca Carey, Che Grayson, Claire Roe, Gavin Fullerton, Jordie Bellaire, Marianna Ignazzi, Pornsak Pichetshote, Tyler Boss, and Valentine De Landro. And don’t worry, the creators plan to expand this chilling world with more stories later!

DC’s “All In” initiative unleashes its first major crossover, We Are Yesterday. This six-part epic, spearheaded by Mark Waid, spans Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, Justice League Unlimited, and the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual, with a team of co-writers and artists contributing to the grand event.

The first chapter debuts on April 16th in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38, pitting Gorilla Grodd against Superman and Batman. Grodd’s psychic abilities seemingly give him glimpses into the future, and he may even hold clues to Darkseid’s death!

The second part of the crossover event unfolds in Justice League Unlimited #6, written by Mark Waid with art by Travis Moore. As the mystery of the Inferno Cult deepens, the League faces a terrifying revelation: the cult’s ranks include some of their most formidable foes, from Lex Luthor and The Joker to Cheetah.

Batman and his allies pose confidently against a vibrant red background, showcasing their unity and strength.

Part three arrives on April 30th with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual. Written by Mark Waid, Christopher Cantwell, and Morgan Hampton, with art by Dan McDaid and Clayton Henry, this issue reveals the secret origins of DC’s premier supervillain team and marks the World’s Finest debut of Green Lantern John Stewart.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38 hits shelves on April 16th, followed by Justice League Unlimited #6 on April 23rd. Rounding out the month, the Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2025 Annual arrives on April 30th.

Review

This crossover event promises to be an exciting expansion of the narratives unfolding in both Batman/Superman: World’s Finest and Justice League Unlimited, especially with Mark Waid at the helm of both titles! The “Inferno” storyline in Justice League Unlimited has been a slow burn. With that said, I am thrilled at the prospect of this event propelling us further into DC’s ambitious “All-In” initiative.
