Earlier this year, Godzilla clashed with Marvel heroes, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, with many of those encounters culminating in uneasy alliances against shared threats. This time, though, the King of the Monsters is clearly the villain. As a result, the tension is greater, and both Marvel and Toho have raised the stakes accordingly.
Godzilla has awakened from dormancy in a fury, unleashing devastation across the Marvel Universe. As Earth’s Mightiest Heroes unite to stop the monstrous threat, their efforts prove futile against the Bringer of Destruction. Desperate, they turn to unlikely allies, including some of Earth’s most notorious villains, in a last-ditch attempt to halt Godzilla’s rampage. But even combined forces may not be enough as the creature tears through dimensions, including the Dark Dimension itself. Meanwhile, a mysterious link to Vibranium raises alarming questions for Wakanda. In the face of this unstoppable force, the entire Marvel Universe must rally like never before. This is just the beginning chapter of an epic battle for Earth’s survival.

The issue begins with Mole Man testing a new weapon, which unintentionally awakens Godzilla. Unfortunately, this also rouses a dormant Celestial buried deep within the Earth. As chaos erupts, the Fantastic Four find themselves trapped between a clash of titans: Godzilla and the Celestial. However, the most urgent concern is protecting the people of Manhattan who are caught in the crossfire. While the Avengers work to contain the destruction, Reed Richards and the Black Panther race to reverse-engineer Mole Man’s device in hopes of regaining control before the situation spirals further out of hand.
Gerry Duggan demonstrates a strong grasp of Marvel’s heroes and how to craft thrilling action. Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 is largely a nonstop battle, but Duggan skillfully weaves in character beats and humor throughout, preventing the chaos from feeling repetitive. These moments keep the pace lively while also delivering answers to big fan questions, such as whether Captain America’s shield can withstand Godzilla’s atomic breath.
Scattered throughout the issue are enjoyable moments beyond Godzilla’s path of destruction. Quicksilver plays a key role, using his speed to rescue civilians from collapsing buildings. One standout page shows his blue energy trail zigzagging through a stairwell in a dynamic side view. Other memorable bits, like Thing trading jabs with J. Jonah Jameson.

If there’s a minor complaint, it’s that the story glosses over why certain major characters like Doctor Strange or the X-Men aren’t involved in the battle. While it’s appreciated that their absence is acknowledged, the explanations feel a bit too convenient.
Javier Garrón brings the story to life with a dynamic, energetic style that suits the action perfectly. Some character expressions lean more toward comedic manga than serious drama, which enhances the humor. At times, Godzilla appears more cartoonish than terrifying, but overall, the art amplifies the fun and fast-paced tone.
Another standout feature is the use of sound effects, which often dominate the sides of pages. These oversized effects enhance the kaiju scale atmosphere, stretching across panel backgrounds or amplifying key moments to give the comic a true blockbuster feel.

Finally, Mark Brooks absolutely nails it with the regular wrap-around Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 cover. It’s pure chaos in the best way possible. Godzilla towering over a devastated city as nearly every major Marvel hero comes in to stop the carnage. The detail is incredible: each character is instantly recognizable and dynamic, from Spider-Man mid-leap to Hulk ready to throw down. The lighting and perspective give it a blockbuster feel, like a cinematic event frozen in a perfect moment. It’s bold, explosive, and filled with energy in exactly the kind of wild crossover fun you hope for when a kaiju meets the Marvel Universe.
Overall, despite a few panels where the art clashes with the intended sense of horror, Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #1 delivers everything fans of the franchise could want. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes wage a relentless battle against the King of the Monsters in a spectacular showdown.
