‘Action Comics’ #1087 Delivers a Soaring Start for Superboy!

It’s an exciting time to be a Superman fan! With James Gunn’s new movie on the horizon and DC Comics’ “Summer of Superman” event in full swing, there’s a lot of Superman buzz going around. So, when DC announced that legendary writer Mark Waid would be taking over Action Comics and focusing on a young Clark Kent as Superboy, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. However, if Action Comics #1087 is any indication, Waid and artist Skylar Patridge are set to win over Superman fans all summer long.

The comic opens in Metropolis at the “Expo of Tomorrow,” and immediately, Waid’s writing shines. He captures Superman’s core optimism, sense of duty, and inherent goodness, but also explores the challenges of being the world’s most powerful teen hero. The dialogue is charming and moves the story along effortlessly. What’s particularly endearing is Waid’s portrayal of Pa Kent training a young Clark in superhero history, a sweet nod to classic Superman stories. It’s clear that Waid loves the concept of a sincere, heartfelt approach to a young hero learning the ropes, and it shows.

This issue is a visual feast thanks to Skylar Patridge’s dynamic and expressive artwork. Her pencils are clean and energetic, perfectly showing off Superman’s powers and the quieter moments of his civilian life. The action scenes are exciting, and her character designs are distinctive. You can practically feel the impact of every punch and the grace of every flight. The way the panels are laid out guides your eye smoothly through the story, and the bright, bold colors perfectly match the hopeful tone of the comic.

DC Comics

Action Comics #1087 is a refreshing take on the Man of Steel, bursting with energy and heart. However, what really sets this issue apart is how it mixes classic Superman ideas with fresh perspectives. Waid and Patridge don’t try to completely change Superman; instead, they polish what’s already there to a dazzling shine, showing us why he’s been loved for generations. There’s a real sense of wonder and excitement on every page, making you believe again in the power of hope and the unwavering spirit of heroism.

This first issue focuses on the soul of young Clark Kent, exploring his youth as he deals with the weight of heroism, growing up, and his blossoming new abilities. You see this in the back-and-forth between an excited Clark and his worried parents, and Clark’s hesitation to use brute force for fear of accidentally hurting a villain. Patridge’s fantastic art perfectly captures Clark’s animated and personable expressions, showing his fear, confusion, and passion; all fitting for the uncertainty of teenage life.

It’s great to revisit Clark as Superboy in his first public appearance and all the challenges that come with it. He’s still inexperienced, and there are many great moments in the issue that highlight this, from his hearing abilities going awry when he loses focus to his telescopic vision picking up distant objects and making him think they are right in front of him; it’s all great to watch unfold.
