The Space Ghost saga is nearing its dramatic conclusion as David Pepose and Jonathan Lau present a devastated Ghost Planet. The villainous Council of Doom has triumphed, and Doctor Xander Ibal seems to hold all the power. Is this truly the end for our hero?
Absolutely not, Space Ghost #12 delivers a brutal reminder of the consequences of crossing the cosmic hero! This comic is pure, unadulterated action and fun from start to finish. We kick things off at Robo Corp Towers with the smug Doctor Xander Ibal finally nabbing the “Binary Language Integrated Prototype,” Blip! This is a clever way to remind us just how important Blip is, especially since he hasn’t been in the spotlight much since Creature King showed up. Turns out, Doctor Ibal needs Blip for something called the Ultima Protocols; sounds ominous, right? It’s all about achieving a collective.
We then jump to the Ghost Planet, and let’s just say the Council of Doom has been very busy. The bad guys are patting themselves on the back about taking out Space Ghost last issue, but Metallus, the resident metalhead and voice of reason, points out the obvious: “no body, no deaths.” Meanwhile, Space Ghost is in rough shape, with Jan and Jace doing their best to drag him to safety after the Council’s beatdown. Things are looking bleak, and the emotional punch is amplified by a flashback to Space Ghost and Jan’s argument from the previous issue.
After patching their wounds, the heroes come up with a classic plan: get the villains fighting amongst themselves! What happens next is a seriously cool display of brains beating brawn, all thanks to Jonathan Lau’s awesome artwork. The comic wraps up with a last-second save, but with a major twist, as the galaxy is now under the mental control of a sinister new foe.

David Pepose and Jonathan Lau’s Space Ghost has consistently delivered a high-octane experience over its 12-issue run, and this penultimate installment emphatically reinforces just how awesome the cosmic phantom hero truly is. This comic is a blast of action, fun, and thrilling moments, maintaining a brisk pace that rarely lets up before hitting you with another exciting panel.
One of the highlights is the dynamic within the Council of Doom. This collection of Space Ghost’s most notorious villains is genuinely compelling. With the possible exception of Brak, who feels a bit like the odd one out in terms of evilness, each member brings a unique and dangerous element to the group. Moltar’s scientific brilliance, Metallus’s cool intensity, Widow’s calm cunning, and Zorak’s zealous bloodlust all contribute to a fantastic villainous ensemble, especially considering Space Ghost’s established history with most of them throughout the series.
Jan and Jace continue to be the charming anchors of this book. Their humor and wit are a constant delight, from Jan’s spot-on “Council of Dorks” quip to Jace’s classic plan to sow discord among the villains. While the title may be Space Ghost, Jan, Jace, and even Blip are integral to the book’s appeal and significantly enhance the overall experience.
Jonathan Lau’s artwork continues to be impressive, offering a detailed and grand visual style. He masterfully blends the diverse and interesting designs of the villains, creating a cohesive and striking look. However, it’s in the action sequences and set pieces where Lau truly shines. The comic is packed with bombastic, action-filled moments that never stop throwing more awesome action at you.
And speaking of highlights, that panel of Space Ghost’s fiery fist overpowering the Creature King? Absolutely chef’s kiss. It’s an epic, badass, and truly spectacular moment, showcasing Lau’s impactful art and colors perfectly.
Finally, the lettering by Taylor Esposito continues to impress. The way he visually represents every action, from explosions and fire to energy and grenades, adds so much dynamism and truly immerses you in the excitement. That massive explosion after the rocket fuel went up? Absolutely perfect.
